Beat Vs. Boston Breakers Sunday

KENNESAW, GA (July 8, 2010) - At the historic Harvard Stadium in Cambridge, Ma., the Atlanta Beat (1-6-4) and the Boston Breakers (2-5-4) will meet for the first time this regular season on Sunday, July 11 at 6:00 P.M. The match marks a second of three consecutive road games for the Beat and follows Wednesday night's 1-1 tie against the Chicago Red Stars.

Atlanta struck first Wednesday when Danish midfielder Johanna Rasmussen capitalized in 30th minute. The play began with an Atlanta Beat free kick that drew Red Stars goalkeeper Jillian Loyden out of the box to make a punching save. Rasmussen followed the save chipping a shot into the open net. The game finished at one goal apiece after Chicago equalized in the 42nd minute. Red Stars Midfielder Formiga created the goal scoring opportunity when she served a ball into the box and forward Cristiane flicked it towards Ella Masar. Masar finished with the header scoring the final goal of the match. Both goalkeepers, Loyden (Chicago Red Stars) and Hope Solo (Atlanta Beat), had several big saves to preserve the one goal tie.

The sixth-place Boston Breakers approach Sunday night's match after earning a 2-1 result against the second-place Philadelphia Independence on July 4. Midfielder Kristine Lilly scored the game-winner in the 84th minute to follow an Independence finish in the 18th minute by former Breaker, Amy Rodriguez.

The Breakers and the Beat hold the two bottom slots in the WPS standings at sixth and seventh respectively. In 11 games, the Beat have accumulated 121 shots, with 56 of them on-goal while the Breakers have 137 shots with 67 of them on-goal. Beat goalkeepers have notched 53 saves this season compared to the Breakers' 37. In the nets, Beat goalkeepers lead shutouts with a total of three on the season and one ahead of the Breakers' Ashley Philips who has two.. The Breakers have scored nine goals all season and the Beat have finished six.

The Beat will conclude their road trip with a match on Sunday July 18 against Sky Blue FC in Piscataway, NJ at 7:00 p.m. EST.
