
Beat Host Freedom Wednesday

KENNESAW, GA (July 26, 2010) - The Atlanta Beat (3-7-4) host Abby Wambach (4-6-5) and the Washington Freedom for Fan Appreciation Night on Wednesday, July 28 at 7:30 PM in the KSU Soccer as the first of two home matches this week.
The Beat's last match was a 1-0 victory over the Chicago Red Stars at home on July 21. Beat forward Eniola Aluko scored the only goal of the match, her second game-winning goal in a row. Her last score came on July 18 when the Beat earned their first road win, a 1-0 upset over fourth-place Sky Blue FC. The Beat come into Wednesday night's game on their first two-game winning streak of the season.
The Freedom's last match was a 4-1 loss against first place FC Gold Pride. FC Gold Pride forward Tiffeny Milbrett and All-Star captain Marta scored twice. Freedom forward Abby Wambach scored the Freedom's only goal of the match in the 43rd minute off of an assist from forward Cat Whitehill. The Freedom have not won a match since May 30 when they defeated the Philadelphia Independence 2-1. They are 0-4-4 since May 30 and the Freedom enter Wednesday night's match on a three-game skid.
The Beat have gone 3-2-3 since their last game against the Freedom, a 2-0 loss on May 16. Although the Beat out-shot the Freedom 21-10, Washington put two balls in the back of the net. Freedom forward Lene Mykjaland scored in the 28th minute on an assist from Wambach before Wambach scored in the 63th minute on an assist from midfielder Sonia Bompastor.
Both teams sit at the bottom of the league in offense and defense. The Freedom average 1.40 goals scored per game in 15 games, while the Beat average .64 scores in 14 games. Defensively, the Freedom has allowed an average of 1.53 goals per game while the Beat have allowed an average of 1.36. The Beat are tied with the Red Stars and FC Gold Pride for second place in shutouts with five apiece.
Fans will also see a matchup between two of the league's three top scorers: Aluko (Beat) and Wambach (Freedom) who are in a three-way tie for fourth place with Breakers forward Kelly Smith for most goals-scored. All three have recorded six finishes on the season.
Beat goalkeeper Hope Solo and Wambach will play on the same field for the first time since July 17. However, this time, they'll be on opposing sides of the field. Solo and Wambach were both called-up to the US Women's National team for a two-game series against Sweden. The US tied Sweden on July 13 1-1, and defeated them 3-0 on July 17. Wambach scored twice in the July 17 victory, while Solo recorded her 50th career shutout.
