(Westport, Conn., May 10, 2004) â Kansas City Comets forward Jamar Beasley was named as the MISL Rookie of Year today. Beasley was also honored recently as a member of the MISL's All-Rookie Team.
Voting for the MISL Rookie of the Year followed the conclusion of the League 's 162-game regular season, and preceded the MISL Championship Series. Beasley was the clear winning selection by the 40-member panel, which included team executives and media representatives from each of the MISL's nine host cities. Voters cast first-, second-, and third-place votes. A first-place vote was worth five points, a second-place vote was worth three points, and a third-place vote was worth one point. Beasley received 24 first-place votes and was the second- place selection on eight other ballots.
Beasley enjoyed immediate success with the Kansas City. In the Comets' season opener in October, Beasley posted a goal and an assist for his first two points in the MISL. Beasley went on to play all 36 regular season games and appeared in both post-season contests. The 24-year-old finished the regular season with 31 goals and 15 assists for 46 total points. He tallied at least one point in 25 games. Beasley finished second in scoring with the Comets and trailed only two- time MVP Dino Delevski. He finished as the highest scoring rookie in the MISL in a tie for 11th place (46pts.) and also tied for seventh in goals (31g).
Beasley began his professional soccer career in 1998 when he signed with Major League Soccer (MLS) and Project-40 directly out of high school. At that time, he was the youngest player in MLS history. Beasley spent four seasons in MLS as a member of the New England Revolution and the Chicago Fire. He recorded seven goals and 22 points in 59 regular season games. The native of Ft. Wayne, Ind. also spent time with the Italian "Serie C" club Puteolana and the Charleston Battery and Indiana Blast of the A-League and also trained with the Italian club AC Milan.
Beasley was a 1998 Parade All-American and was hailed as one of American soccer's future superstars in the April 13, 1998 issues of Sports Illustrated. He played for the U20 National Team in the 1999 World Youth Championships. Beasley's younger brother DaMarcus currently plays for the Chicago Fire and the U.S. National Team.
