Waikiki BeachBoys News Release
The Waikiki BeachBoys snapped a three-game losing streak with a 6-5 win over the visiting Honolulu Sharks this afternoon at Waipahu's Hans L'Orange Park. Waikiki (9-11) had lost eight of its last nine games prior to today's triumph over the HWB East Division-leading Sharks (10-9-1).
New York Mets prospect Lucas Duda led the way for Waikiki with three hits on the afternoon including a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. Teammate Michael McKenry blasted a solo home run in the seventh frame to put his squad up for the first time since the second inning, and Waikiki shortstop Justin Sellers chipped in two RBIs. The BeachBoys plated two runs in the second, sixth and seventh innings, and out-hit the Sharks 9-7.
Fuminori Yokogawa went 2-3 with a double and two RBIs to pace Honolulu, while fellow Sharks Kyler Burke and Jason Place each hit solo home runs in the losing effort.
Waikiki starter Yutaka Tamaki (3.12 ERA) improved to 2-0 on the campaign after throwing 66 of his 90 pitches for strikes in his seven-inning outing during which he allowed five runs on seven hits and struck out six. David Newton struck out two in the ninth frame to earn his first save of the season.
Chad Thall (0-2, 3.07 ERA) surrendered the lead in the seventh, and took the loss for Honolulu. Sharks starter Shingo Matsuzaki struck out nine through five innings and did not factor in the decision. Maui native Kanekoa Texeira saw an inning of action in which he allowed two runs on two hits without registering a strikeout.
Both squads return for the second of a three-game series tomorrow at Hans L'Orange Park. First pitch is scheduled for noon. Today's game marked the halfway point of the season, as 20 of the league's 40 games are now in the books.
