Battle of Arms Ends in Shutout Loss

LAKE ELSINORE, CA - Tyson Perez allowed just one run over seven innings but his counterpart Matt Andriese shut down the JetHawks lineup in a 1-0 loss to the Lake Elsinore Storm in Game 1 of the South Division Mini-Series on Wednesday night at The Diamond.
Andriese (1-0), who had allowed just two earned runs in 22 innings at home against the JetHawks this season, tossed eight scoreless innings and struck out seven. Jerry Sullivan pitched a perfect ninth inning to notch the save and hand Lancaster its first shutout loss this season.
In the top of the first inning Andrew Aplin reached third base on an error by shortstop Stephen Carmon. Domingo Santana grounded out to end the inning. It was the only time a JetHawk would reach third in the game.
In both the second and third innings Lancaster put the leadoff man aboard only to have the next batters ground into identical 1-6-3 double plays.
Perez's only mistake came in the second inning. He walked Luis Domoromo with one out, the only walk he issued in the game. Domoromo moved to second base on a Donovan Tate ground ball and Cory Spangenberg, with two outs, lined a ball to centerfield to score the game's only run.
Perez retired the final 11 batters he faced and gave up just three hits while tying a career-high with eight strikeouts.
Andriese also allowed just three hits and walked just one batter. Through the first seven innings, the only ball the JetHawks had hit out of the infield was a Carlos Perez bloop single over shortstop. All of the team's first 21 outs were either by strikeout or groundout.
The loss dropped Lancaster to 1-14 at The Diamond this season. Eight of the 14 losses were by just one run.
The JetHawks return home to The Hangar on the brink of elimination in the best-of-three Mini-Series. They will take on the Storm in Game 2 of the series on Thursday night at 7:00 pm. Nick Tropeano will get the start against Chris Fetter. If Lancaster wins, a deciding third game of the series will be played at The Hangar on Friday night.
