Mat-Su Miners News Release

PALMER, Alaska - Three members of the Chugiak-Eagle River Chinooks pitching staff combined to throw a one-hitter against the Mat-Su Miners on Thursday.

Starting pitcher Brady Battan threw six innings of one-hit baseball and Brody Harris added 1.2 innings of relief in a 3-1 victory over the Miners at Hermon Brothers Field.

The Chinooks (11-12) opened up the scoring in the top of the second when first baseman Ethan Wiskur drove a double through the outfield gap to score designated hitter Tim Millard.

Millard would add to the Chinooks lead in the following inning, driving in leftfielder Mason Mallard with an RBI single.

Catcher Andy Cosgrove provided the lone hit for the Miners (13-9) with a solo shot over the left field fence in the bottom half of the third inning to cut the deficit to 2-1.

"Andy has been working hard on his offense," Miners head coach Ben Taylor said. "He's known as being a defensive guy, but he's got some pop in him."

The Chinooks added insurance runs in the fourth and eighth innings, capitalizing on RBI hits from second baseman Will Bass and Mallard to take a 4-1 lead.

Mat-Su starting pitcher Cody Deason went 2.1 innings and earned the loss. The right-hander gave up three hits and collected five strikeouts.

"It was really just a fastball and curveball base today," Deason said. "I was feeling good and I felt like I was locating my fastball really well. My curveball was a little dicey in the second and third innings."

Deason's appearance was his first in the Alaska Baseball League after arriving in Palmer on Wednesday.

"It was good to have Cody get his feet wet and get it going now that he's a part of our rotation," Taylor said. "It's nice to bring in a winning ballplayer from a great program. His curveball was good and he hit 92 (mph) tonight, so we look forward to his next start."

Gage O'Brien provided the bulk of the innings on the mound for the Miners. He went 4.2 innings and surrendered two runs on three hits while notching six strikeouts.

"It was big, he did a great job keeping us in the ballgame by throwing some good innings," Taylor said.

Mat-Su closer Jordan Floyd extended his scoreless streak in the Alaska Baseball League to 12 innings after throwing a perfect ninth in his 11th appearance.

Battan led Chugiak-Eagle River on the mound by collecting four strikeouts in six innings of work. Harris and Preston White combined to add another three hitless innings of relief for the Chinooks.

The Miners are scheduled to host the Anchorage Bucs on Friday at 7 p.m. in a home meeting at Hermon Brothers Field.
