Barnstormers Extend Offers to Trio of Veterans

North Country Barnstormers News Release


The North Country Barnstormers have extended Training Camp invitations to three players with previous pro hockey experience.

The three include Todd Bisson of Welland, Ontario; Yevgeniy Kabanets of Ukraine, USSR; and Joel Petkoff of Acton, Ontario.

Bisson played on four Atlantic Coast Hockey League teams last season. He got into a combined total of 21 games with the Cape Fear Fire Antz, Knoxville Ice Bears, Winston-Salem Parrots and Orlando Seals. He had 2 goals and 4 assists for the season.

Bisson spent the 2001-02 season in the United Hockey League. He scored 6 goals and picked up 11 points in 41 games with the Asheville Smoke. Bisson made his pro debut with the East Coast Hockey League's Greenville Growl with 3 games in March of 2001 after completing a four-year career at the NCAA Division I level at Canisius College. He was named Best Forward at Canisus as a senior and was the team's Co-Rookie of the Year as a freshman.

Kabanets is living in Oak Ridge, Tennessee and is working on establishing permanent residency as a U.S. citizen after marrying an American woman. He speaks three languages, obtained a bachelor's degree with a major in business and economics, plus earned a Master of Sports of International Level while at Kiv Slavonic University in the Ukraine.

Kabanets spent a week at training camp this season with the Richmond Riverdogs. He's a 6-foot-1, 190-pound forward who counts 49 career goals and 113 points with 144 penalty minutes in 201 career pro games on both sides of the ocean. His only pro experience in the USA was last season. Kabanets got into 16 games with thhe Long Beach Ice Dogs of the West Coast Hockey League and played 13 games with the Knoxville Ice Bears of the Atlantic Coast Hockey League. He had 3 goals and 7 assists for 10 points for his 29 combined pro contests in this country last winter.

Petkoff has been at training camp this fall with both the Cape Fear Fire Antz of the South East Hockey League and the Rockford Ice Hogs of the United Hockey League. He has Major Junior experience with the Ontario Hockey League's Sudbury Wolves of the Canadian Hockey League.

Petkoff picked up Junior A experience in Canada with the Thornhill Rattlers, Streetsville Derbys and Milton Merchants of the Ontario Provincial Junior A League and the Charlottetown Abbies of the Maritime Junior A League. He was a big scorer at every stop during his Junior A career, including a 58-goal campaign a year ago while racking up 115 points.
