Austin Aztex News Release

AUSTIN, Texas (www.austinaztex.com) - Austin opened the season with two goals and a shutout on rocket strikes from Lawrence Olum in the 18th minute and Jamie Watson in the 77th minute that buried themselves in back of the net for a 2-0 win over Montreal at House Park on Sunday.

Olum's goal came on a rebound after he drilled one off the crossbar. He collected the ball and sent it home. The midfielder then received a yellow card after the goal for the celebration.

Following the goal, the Aztex kept the pressure on Montreal's defense with numerous opportunities throughout the half. Watson nearly connected in the 38th minute after a collision in the Montreal backline sent the goalkeeper scrambling to get back into position. Watson's try led to a corner kick that gave the Aztex more than a minute of possession around the box, but led to no shots.

Both teams managed to get off five shots in the first half, with three corner kicks for the home team and just one for the visitors.

In the second half, the Aztex dominated possession and nearly scored on two chances by Eddie Johnson before Watson's goal sent the home crowd into a frenzy. Defender Leonard Griffin set up Watson's strike on a pass to the left side of the box, which allowed Watson to spin around and shoot one past the helpless keeper.

Montreal's best chance came in stoppage time, but Kevin Sakuda was ready for the challenge and cleared a shot from the goal line, which ended the Impact's hope.

Austin's next game is on Friday at 7:10 p.m. at AC St. Louis. Fans can follow the action on www.austinaztex.com.
