Austin Aztex News Release
Eddie Johnson and Jamie Watson connected two times on Saturday night at House Park, rocketing the Aztex back into first place with a 2-0 victory over the NSC Minnesota Stars.
In the 24th minute, Johnson struck for the first time in the game after receiving a through ball from Watson that set up a one-on-one against the Minnesota (7-12-7) keeper. After faking to the right, Johnson dodged back outside and left the helpless keeper with nothing to do but watch him put it in the back of the net.
The Aztex (14-3-7) were able to keep the pressure on for much of the first half after the goal with opportunities by both Max Griffin and Lance Watson that went amiss.
Much of the second half action was played in the middle third of the field with Austin not able to break past the Stars defense for a shot until Randi Patterson's attempt was saved in the 74th minute.
Watson though was finally able to penetrate deep into the heart of the defense to set Johnson for the second time of the night that sealed the victory for the top team in the league.
Johnson's two strikes gave him 13 for the year, now just two behind the league's leader Ryan Pore (Portland). Goalkeeper Miguel Gallardo made two saves on the night in 11 attempts for Minnesota and recorded his sixth shutout of the 2010 season.
Austin has a three-game road trip ahead of them against Puerto Rico, FC Tampa Bay and AC St. Louis in the next two weeks. On the road against the trio this season, Austin went 1-1-1, but is 4-1-3 counting their trips to House Park.
