Aztex Hit The Road To Face AC St. Louis

April 16, 2010 - USL First Division (USL-1)
Austin Aztex News Release

AUSTIN, Texas (www.austinaztex.com) - Austin heads east for its first road test of the season on Sunday - a clash at the newly-minted AC St. Louis.

St. Louis lost its inaugural match last weekend after starting the match disadvantaged with only 10 men due to an identification card mix-up that left an 11th man scrambling to get back to the field.

Only four minutes into the match, the Carolina RailHawks capitalized and found themselves up 1-0. They added to the tally soon after, midway through the first half. The 2-0 decision would stand, leaving St. Louis still searching for its first-ever franchise win.

On the other side of the pitch, the Austin Aztex head into the match unbeaten after their first match with a 2-0 victory in their opener at House Park. Lawrence Olum scored the Aztex first goal of the season on a rebound off a shot that banged off the crossbar. Jamie Watson doubled the score later in the second half to close out the Montreal Impact, who won the league just a year ago.

Since the last match, the Aztex have signed two new young players in Stephan Campbell and Ronald Caicedo, in addition to now having an extra week to gel with Joey Worthen and Yohance Marshall (signed just before the Montreal match).

Because of the recent signings, neither Caicedo nor Campbell will be available to the team on Sunday, along with defender Wes Allen.

The 7 p.m. Central match can be seen live on the Austin Aztex website: www.austinaztex.com, or on St. Louis' website: http://www.ac-stlouis.com/?q=livestream.

Game Notes:

Aztex vs. AC St. Louis

Austin and St. Louis have never before met on the pitch, but Sunday's match is the first of four in the 2010 season.

Lions of April

Austin is unbeaten in the month of April in its franchise history. Last season, the Aztex finished the month 1-0-2, beating Cleveland 3-0 and drawing with both Minnesota and Vancouver. In 2010, the Aztex are also 1-0 after beating Montreal 2-0.

Firing Blanks

The Aztex recorded five shutouts a season ago and have added to their total this year with one in their first game last Sunday.

The Wizard of Austin

Formerly with the Kansas City Wizards, Lance Watson shined in his Aztex debut on Sunday, recording an assist and shutting down the powerful Montreal attack on the back line. Watson would be named "Man of the Match" following the win.

Double Up

With one swift strike in the 66th minute, Jamie Watson doubled his goal total with the Aztex. Watson scored one goal last year after joining the squad following the season's start.

Not in Our House

Austin moved venues over the offseason to House Park in downtown Austin, which has already paid dividends after one game. The Aztex won just four games all of last season at Nelson Field, but are 1-0 with a shutout at their new home.

What's Next?

Austin's next match is at 6 p.m. on April 25 at House Park in downtown Austin. The Aztex face the Rochester Rhinos, who they were 0-3 against last year.
