AUGUSTA, Ga. - Marvin Stone's 14-yard touchdown from Brandon Satcher with 23 seconds remaining lifted the Augusta Spartans to a 49-45 victory over the Columbus Lions in a World Indoor Football League game before 5,200 at the James Brown Arena Saturday, March 24.
The home-opening victory over the previously undefeated Lions lifted the Spartans to a 2-1 record and a three-way tie with Columbus and Osceola for first place.
Stone finished with six catches for 37 yards and three touchdowns. Satcher, who threw an interception on his first play coming off the bench, completed his next eight passes for 108 yards and four touchdowns.
Columbus erased an 11-point deficit to take a 45-42 lead on Roshard Gilyard's 9-yard fumble recovery with 4:14 remaining before Augusta drove seven plays for the go-ahead score and then denied the Lions on the game's final play.
Anthony Young caught six passes for 108 yards and two touchdowns for the Spartans, while Willie Butler rushed for one score. Richard Dykes had a 50-yard kickoff return and kicker Shon Rowser was 5-7 on PAT attempts and converted two "UNOs" - putting the ball through the upright on a kickoff.
Silas Daniels caught three touchdown passes from Andrew McKay and finished with 100 yards on eight catches. Mahlon Carey had two interceptions, one for a 50-yard touchdown that helped the Lions turn a 15-7 first quarter deficit into a 28-21 halftime lead.
Stone was named the game's offensive MVP, John Cratic defensive, TJ Watkins lineman and Rowser special teams. The Spartans earned a league single-best 276 "style points" from a committee of six media members, the Lions 106.
The WIFL returns to action next Saturday, March 31 with Columbus traveling to Osceola and Daytona Beach (0-3) hosting Augusta.
