June 9, 2002 - Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA) News Release

UNIONDALE, NY - Cindy Parlow had a goal and an assist and Charmaine Hooper also scored as the Atlanta Beat defeated the New York Power 2-0 Sunday evening at Mitchel Athletic Complex. The victory was Atlanta's (5-3-1, 16 pts.) fourth consecutive win, while New York (2-6-1, 7pts.) suffered its second straight loss.

Hooper jump-started the Beat offense in the 15th minute with her fifth goal of the season. Liping Wang dumped the ball down in the right corner to Parlow, who dribbled to the end line and served a pretty cross to an unmarked Hooper at the far post. The Canadian international precisely headed the ball past New York goalkeeper Nicole Williams from seven yards.

New York nearly evened the score in the 20th minute when Sara Whalen dribbled 40 yards down field and cracked a hard shot from the eight side, but Atlanta goalkeeper Briana Scurry pushed the near post out of bounds.

Atlanta continued to press hard, putting together a solid scoring opportunity in the 24th minute when Nikki Serlenga served great ball into Parlow whose header banged off the crossbar. Kylie Bivens hammered the rebound from five yards out, but Williams made a brilliant point-blank save to stop the goal.

Parlow put the game away in the 39th minute with an opportunistic goal. New York's Krista Davey made a brilliant tackle to stop Liping Wang on a breakaway; however, Davey's poor distribution went directly to Atlanta's Homarwe Sawa, who hammered a shot off the left post. An onrushing Parlow was there to clean up and calmly put the rebound past a flying Williams.

New York's best scoring chance in the second half came in the 62nd minute when Tiffeny Milbrett made a nice turn at the top of the penalty area and cracked a shot toward the left post, but a diving save by Scurry denied the attempt.

New York turned up the offensive pressure in the last 15 minutes after Minna Mustonen came in for Ronnie Fair, but the Power was unable to convert on numerous opportunities.

Atlanta is now 3-0-2 all-time against New York.
