At-bat with Chris Allen

Published on March 15, 2007 under South Coast League (SCL) News Release

With just over two months before Opening Night in Macon, GA, I sat down with Chief Operating Officer Chris Allen to discuss the status of the South Coast League. From vision that began in the summer of 2005.

(Kevin) How do you feel about what we've accomplished so far?

(Chris) I love where we're at! Some markets are catching on quicker than others, but the support is there and I feel that all six of our franchises have a realistic chance at being very successful.

(Kevin) Do you have any last minute worries or concerns?

(Chris) Anytime you try to build something from the ground up there are roadblocks along the way. We just try to think them through and handle them head on, but in the end we don't have all the answers. Between Jamie and myself we have over 15 years of combined experience in baseball, but sometimes experience can only take you so far and you do your best to get through each challenge.

(Kevin) What has been one of your biggest obstacles to overcome?

(Chris) It's all about gaining credibility in our markets. Independent baseball hasn't had the best reputation in the southeast, and we are actively trying to change that perception. With our capital improvements to our ballparks and our presentation of a fun and friendly family atmosphere, I feel that we can reestablish our connection with the communities.

(Kevin) Is the current model of the SCL similar to your initial vision in 2005?

(Chris) I feel that we are on track in all areas of our operation. We want our games to be an experience, and a night out that our fans remember and look forward to attending. On the field, our focus on player growth and development has already paid dividends with the signings of three young men (Keith Ramsey - Texas Rangers, Jake Ociesa - Philadelphia Phillies, and Robby Jacobson - San Diego Padres). We hope to build off this momentum and continue our success throughout the season.

(Kevin) Why should fans come out to the ballpark this season?

(Chris) We plan on bringing a "New Age" form of baseball entertainment to our stadiums this season. We want our fans to leave the ballpark wanting more, and knowing that they will be back for another game.

(Kevin) What do you see this league becoming in the next decade?

(Chris) In my opinion, the sky's the limit. We hope to have between 12-16 teams within the first five years along with some new ballparks to play in. We may even announce the plans for a new ballpark in 2008 before we play a game this season.

(Kevin) With March Madness starting today, who do you have winning it all?

(Chris) I lived in North Carolina for five years, so I'm going to have to go with the Tarheels this season. If I went with my heart, it would be the Hokies of Virginia Tech.
