Question from Brandy in Michigan: "What do you think of all the college underclassmen declaring for the NBA draft? In other words, what do you think of the NBA taking players out of college before they graduate?"
Answer: Brandy. Thanks for the questions. I really like to answer questions about the ABA, but it seems that I receive many asking about the NBA too. I'm ambivalent on the subject. At first glance, I believe that a good education should trump playing in the NBA for a year or two and think it's better to stay in school. On the other hand, if a young man has the talent and desire to play in the NBA, he should have the right to make the decision that he thinks best for him. He also knows that he could risk a career-ending injury in college and wants to take advantage of the opportunity to play in the NBA when it presents itself. Considering that only a half dozen or dozen out of the thousands of college players have the skills to play as under-classmen, I would tend to favor letting the individual players and the NBA teams make the decision and definitely do not favor a rule that would prohibit it. If you have a question, please email joenewman@abalive.com.
Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
