April 12, 2006 - American Basketball Association (ABA) News Release
Question from Dennis W., Detroit: "How do you determine which cities get ABA teams? You seem to have every size city. Doesn't a city have to fit a certain qualification?"
Answer: Dennis. Thank you for the questions. I get versions of these questions quite often. First, we are expanding rapidly and will have over sixty teams next season. The cities vary in size from NYC, LA, Detroit, Chicago, Dallas, Atlanta etc to small cities like Gallup NM, Rockville MD, Bellingham WA etc to mid-sized cities like Rochester, Buffalo, Knoxville, etc. The only consistent thing is BASKETBALL FANS. The ABA will work wherever there are fans which enjoy exciting fast-paced professional basketball at affordable prices. And unlike the NBA, MLB, NFL or NHL, it does not take millions of dollars to operate a team and huge sponsorships and high priced tickets to support the them. The ABA model works in NYC and Bellingham and Rochester - the key is giving people an enjoyable evening at affordable prices.
If Walmart or McDonalds or Lowes built only in LA, NYC, Detroit, Chicago etc., they would miss out on hundreds of great cities and millions of wonderful customers throughout the US, Canada and Mexico. They like their large markets; they like their mid-sized markets; they like their small markets. And they are successful in all of them. We like all sized markets and we will be successful if we do like Walmart, McDonalds or Lowes - deliver quality products, good service at affordable prices. If you have a question, please email joenewman@abalive.com.
Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams. For information on professional minor leagues, please see OSC's basketball section.
