Long Beach Armada News Release

LONG BEACH, CA- Samone Peters made sure first place Reno would have to wait to celebrate a potential first-half Golden Baseball League title by launching a two-out, walk-off single to center to give Long Beach a 3-2 victory in the bottom of the 10th inning.

"We came out here today real loose," said Peters. "The games we win, we have fun. The games we lose, we're all trying too hard."

Scott Schneider (1-4) took the loss pitching the final one and two-third innings while Mike Peck (1-0) picked up the win despite surrendering the tying run in the ninth.

"The way things have been going the last few games, you just want to go out, get it done, and get the win as fast as possible," said Peck.

The win snaps a five-game losing streak for the Armada (19-17) and they are the only team that can catch the Silver Sox (23-14), just three and a half games ahead of Long Beach. The first half of the season ends on Thursday. Long Beach plays four in Fullerton and Reno plays three against San Diego at home, making one the magic number for the Silver Sox.

"But it's baseball," said Peck. "You still have the second half to come back."

Reno's Edgar Varela tied the game at 2-2 in the ninth with a two-out RBI single off of Peck. Peck had entered the game with one out in the eighth.

The win was set up when shortstop CJ Lang could not field a slow roller off the bat of Jeff LaRue. A sacrifice bunt by Chris Klemm put LaRue in scoring position which allowed him to score on Peters' hit.

Ryan Claypool went the first six and two-thirds innings for Long Beach, giving up an unearned run on four hits, and leaving with a 2-1 lead. A bloop double by Jeremy Hernandez gave the Armada a 2-1 lead in the fifth.

Ben Thurmond was denied his league-leading fifth win despite giving up nine hits over eight innings. Thurmond retired the final seven Armada players he faced.

Reno scored an unearned run in the first off a dropped fly ball by right fielder Chris Klemm, before the Armada tied it in the second with an RBI single from Ryan Stevenson.

Two thirds of the Reno coaching staff was ejected during the game, manager Les Lancaster in the fifth and coach Rafael Melchione in the eighth for various disagreements with the umpiring crew. After Melchione's ejection, he tossed a bucket of balls from the Reno dugout on his way into the clubhouse.

The Armada closes out the first half of the season with four games at the Fullerton Flyers starting on Monday. The second half begins at Blair Field on Friday at 7:05 p.m. against the Fullerton Flyers.
