PEORIA (July 16, 2016) - Arizona United Soccer Club had its four-match home unbeaten streak snapped in a 3-2 loss to Seattle Sounders FC 2 in front of 1,325 fans at the Peoria Sports Complex.
"Horrible losing the game," said Arizona United head coach Fran Yallop. "The whole thing is about winning and it feels bad when you lose. It doesn't matter how it comes about. We played some decent stuff. We created some chances. But, it was sort of for nothing. We didn't win, we lost."
S2's Darwin Jones scored twice in the match, including the game winner. In the 56th minute, Seattle's Emir Alihodizic hit Jones in stride as he ran behind the defense down the right side of the field. Jones then beat Arizona United goalkeeper Jordan Stagmiller to earn his team the win.
Both of Arizona United's goals were scored in the first half. Forward Chris Cortez beat the goalkeeper from about 25 yards away in the 29th minute to make it 1-1. Then forward Long Tan slid into a pass from teammate Brock Granger and beat the S2 goalkeeper to give United a 2-1 lead.
The club looked like it would shepherd its one-goal lead into the half, but an unlucky bounce cost United.
Following a point-blank kick save by Stagmiller, the ball bounced to Seattle's Jordan Schweitzer outside of the box. He then chipped a shot that sailed over the goalkeeper's head and into the net to make it 2-2 at the half.
"I think we didn't quit; that was the main thing," Yallop said. "That's not in us. We just made some elementary errors. We've talked about it all week and basically most of the season. Bad turnovers and a silly mistake by one player that results in a chance or a goal. That's usually not good. They weren't very good in the back either. But, we couldn't score more than the opposition."
Arizona United falls to 4-7-6 on the season. The club's next USL match is next Friday, July 22, at Real Monarchs SLC at 6 P.M. local time. Fans can attend a watch Party at the Rose and Crown Pub in downtown Phoenix (628 E Adams St, Phoenix, AZ 85004).
