Phoenix Rising FC News Release
Arizona United Soccer Club concluded its two-match road trip with a 3-1 loss to Whitecaps FC 2 in Langley, British Columbia, Canada. WFC2 was led by a hat trick from forward Thomas Sanner, who scored all of his goals after the 80th minute.
Arizona United SC took a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute. Forward Tyler Blackwood took advantage of a major WFC2 mistake in the midfield. A weak pass over the middle of the field rolled right to the feet of Blackwood, who took off toward the net. Unimpeded, Blackwood raced into the box, then beat the oncoming goalkeeper to open the scoring.
United took its 1-0 lead into halftime and appeared ready to build on it in the second half. But, in the 59th minute, midfielder Blair Gavin received his second yellow card and was sent off, leaving Arizona United down a man for the final 30 minutes. WFC2 took advantage, but not until the waning moments of the match.
After several missed opportunities, WFC2 equalized in the 84th minute when midfielder Thomas Gardner, from the left side of the box, slid a pass through traffic to an open Sanner, who smashed the pass into the back of the net. Three minutes later, it was Sanner scoring again, following up his own rebound and then making it 2-1 WFC2. Sanner completed his hat trick in stoppage time.
Arizona United SC falls to 8-10-6 and sits on 30 points, one point out of the final playoff spot. Whitecaps FC 2 improves to 11-6-7 with 40 points and is second in the Western Conference. Arizona United returns to Peoria Sports Complex on Saturday, August 27, to play Real Monarchs SLC. That match will kickoff at 7:30 P.M. and fans can purchase tickets at www.ArizonaUnited.com.
