Scorpions 12, Solar Sox 1

A one-run game in the fifth inning quickly turned into a rout, with the Scottsdale Scorpions beating the Mesa Solar Sox 12-1. The Solar Sox made three errors, while only pushing across four hits.

The speedy top of the order for Mesa produced early, scoring a run in the first inning. Joey Gathright (TB) lead off the game with a single and scored on a single up the middle by fellow Devil Rays' prospect Delmon Young. The Solar Sox took a 1-0 lead but left two runners on base in the first.

The loudest cheers of the day came in the second inning when local product Corey Myers (AZ) hit a solo homerun for the Scorpions. Later in the inning ninth hitter Tommy Whiteman (HOU) hit an RBI single to give Scottsdale a 2-1 lead.

A four-run bottom of the sixth broke the game open for the Scorpions. Whiteman had an RBI single to make the score 4-1 Scottsdale. With two outs and the bases loaded Jason Repko (LA) doubled down the left field line scoring all three runs to make the lead 7-1 in favor of Scottsdale.

Rafters 3, Saguaros 3

For the second time the Robinson Rule has been implemented, in just the second week of the 2004 AFL season the Grand Canyon Rafters and the Peoria Saguaros played to a draw. The first week of action saw the Phoenix Desert Dogs and the Mesa Solar Sox play to a 3-3 tie after 11 innings. The Rule allows each team to preserve its pitching staff and calls for a tie game to be called after 11 innings, the game can be continued at a later time.

The Saguaros started out with a three-run first inning aided by two Rafters' errors. Wayne Lydon (NYM) reached first on a single then stole second and third before Aaron Hill (TOR), with help from Grand Canyon drove in Lydon. Hill and Juan Senreiso (TEX) finished the scoring for Peoria, who would not cross home plate again.

Grand Canyon pulled within two in the fifth, 3-1, before Chris Shelton (DET) hit a two-run shot off of Matt Lorenzo (TEX) in the eighth to tie it up. Jason Bartlett (MIN) had a chance to win it in the top of the tenth with a long shot to centerfield, but Nate McClouth (PIT) robbed him with a diving catch.

John Hattig (TOR) finished the day with two hits and an RBI for the Saguaros, while teammate Joe Hietpas (NYM) tallied three of the Saguaros nine hits. Starting pitcher John Hudgins (TEX) allowed four hits with an earned run and two strike outs.

Kevin Thompson (NYY) and Rob Bowen (MIN) led the Rafters with two hits each. Scott Baker (MIN) had a rough start, giving up four hits with one earned run and three strike outs while his defense allowed two unearned runs. The bullpen combined to hold Peoria to just five hits over ten innings.
