October 19, 2004 - Arizona Fall League (AzFL) News Release
Terrific Tuesday: The Arizona Fall League continues its 13th season with two day games followed by a night game. Mesa will travel to Scottsdale to face the Rafters and the Javelinas will host the Saguaros in Peoria...first pitch is 1:05 pm. The Phoenix Desert Dogs will host the Scottsdale Scorpions in a battle between the American and National Division leaders. Game time is 7:05 pm. Each team will play 38 games and the winners of the two divisions will meet in a one-game championship on November 20th at Scottsdale Stadium.
MONDAY'S RECAPS
Rolls Royce: Five different Scottsdale Scorpions had at least three hits on their way to a 16-7 win over the Phoenix Desert Dogs. Royce Huffman (HOU) was 5-for-5 with a home run, Brian Peterson (CIN) was 4-for-5 and Rickie Weeks (MIL) was 3-for-5 with a home run for the Scorpions, who had 22 hits as a team.
Speedy Gathright: In a game that utilized the Solar Sox speed, Mesa beat Grand Canyon 6-4 at Hohokam Park. Tampa Bay prospect Joey Gathright stole four bases bringing him to a league leading eight for the season. Gathright finished the day 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored. Starting pitcher Adam Wainwright (STL) pitched four scoreless innings for Mesa. Wainwright allowed only two hits, one walk and struck out five.
Triple threat: The Javelinas out dueled the Saguaros 16-13 in a slugfest at Peoria Sports Complex, the game came with a combined six home runs and 26 hits. The Javelinas had a six run fourth inning followed by a eight runs in the fifth. Cleveland prospect Jason Cooper had four hits and teammate Ryan Garko (CLE) added three hits with a two-run home run. Kevin Kouzmanoff (CLE) also added a two-run shot in the Javelinas win.
Garret Anderson: The Arizona Fall League continues its tradition of honoring former player and managers by inducting them into the Hall of Fame. Garret Anderson will be in attendance for the Scorpions-Rafters game on Friday, October 29th at Scottsdale Stadium. The induction ceremony will take place prior to the start of the 7:05 pm game.
Tony Peña, Sr.: The Arizona Fall League continues its tradition of honoring former player and managers by inducting them into the Hall of Fame. Tony Peña, Sr. will be in attendance for the Saguaros-Scorpions game on Wednesday, November 3rd at Scottsdale Stadium. The induction ceremony will take place prior to the start of the 7:05 pm game.
ASU Day at the AFL: Show your ASU spirit and receive $1.00 off admission to the Arizona Fall League on Friday, October 29th at Scottsdale Stadium. The ASU baseball team will be in attendance to sign autographs.
Mark Your Calendars: The Fall League will give away 100 Richie Sexson Bobblehead Dolls October 29th at Scottsdale Stadium. Winners will be selected through a lucky number drawing for all fans in attendance.
