Week Three: Today begins the third week of the 2004 Arizona Fall League season. Both divisions have remained the same at the top, with the Scottsdale Scorpions leading the American Division, and the Phoenix Desert Dogs atop the National Division. Scottsdale's lead has been cut down by the surging Mesa Solar Sox, while the Desert Dogs have remained hot and extended their lead to four games over the Grand Canyon Rafters. The Solar Sox host the Rafters, Phoenix travels to Scottsdale to face the Scorpions and the Javelinas play the Saguaros in Peoria...first pitch for all three games is 1:05 pm.
SATURDAY'S RECAPS
Rally Caps: Entering the ninth inning with a comfortable two-run lead, a lapse by the Peoria Saguaros' bullpen allowed the Mesa Solar Sox to score three runs and win the game 7-6. Gabe Johnson (STL) hit a sacrifice fly to the right field corner scoring pinch runner Joey Gathright (TB) for the eventual winning run. Right fielder Brian Anderson (CWS) was 2-for-2 with a home run, and ninth hitter Pedro Lopez (CWS) was 3-for-4 for the Solar Sox.
Ninth Inning Drama: The Grand Canyon Rafters and the Phoenix Desert Dogs matched each other run for run until the bottom of the ninth inning when Eric Reed (FLA) scored on a passed ball to give the Desert Dogs a 4-3 win. Relief pitcher Randy Messenger (FLA) earned his second win of the season. Kansas City Royals' prospect Mark Teahen was 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Phoenix's starting pitcher Keith Bucktrot (PHI) was dominating on the mound. Bucktrot pitched four innings and allowed no runs on three hits.
Road Victory: The Peoria Javelinas scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning to break a 6-6 tie and beat the Scorpions in Scottsdale.
