Another View on How Joe Johnson Had an MVP Season

April 7, 2020 - BIG3 (BIG3) - Triplets News Release

Joe Johnson and Triplets entered the league as newcomers and ended the season as champions. With the Triplets claiming the treble (Coach of the Year, Championship and MVP), we look back at some of the critical moments that led to Johnson's incredible individual and team accomplishments.

Not only was Johnson special at scoring the ball, but his playmaking was incredibly underrated. When teams doubled him, he found open guys and was able to create space for his teammates. In Week 2's game against Trilogy, Johnson created numerous opportunities early for teammates and then exploited matchups later in the game to seal the win for Triplets.

Over the years, his game has evolved, contrary to what many believe or see. His distribution, defense and creativity saw an extreme uptick in the BIG3. While his isolation and one-on-one offense was the most potent in the league. The combination coupled with the consistency was something most teams in the BIG3 hadn't seen before. It's a big reason why Triplets were so successful.

In this game against 3 Headed Monsters, Johnson told us that he knew exactly where he was going with the ball. The step-back going left was all in his mind. He knew he needed the 4-point shot to end it. It really shows you the level of detail and awareness he has. It's why they call him "no ordinary Joe."

If you speak with Johnson, you'll understand this isn't all about him. Contrary to his popular nickname 'Iso-Joe', he's the opposite of that with his team. Leading the league in assists, holding himself accountable and making big shots not just for him, but as he says in the press conference below, for his team.

Johnson had many big plays, moments and hit many historical milestones in 2019. But in 2020, he's back along with the entire Triplets squad and it doesn't seem like any of them are satisfied with just one title.

"Betta be in shape fellas." Joe Johnson on next season.
