Amarillo to Receive New Owners, Name
Published on May 24, 2002 under Central Hockey League (CHL) News Release
The Central Hockey League has today announced that Hockey Sports of Amarillo, LLC, has obtained the franchise territory rights for the City of Amarillo, Texas, and will immediately oversee all facets of the team's operation. The ownership is comprised of a group of well-known local business people headed by Managing Partners Randy Brown, Bill Toliver and Terry Hawthorne, with immediate plans to develop and expand the organization, beginning with a new team name and logo.
Tuesday, May 28th, at 2:00 PM, the club will host a press conference at the Amarillo Civic Center's V.I.P. Room, detailing specifics of the ownership group, a "Name the Team" contest, a summer in-line program and ticket/corporate sales information. "We are highly committed to building upon the strong hockey tradition previously established in Amarillo, and we are determined to make our organization highly successful, both on and off the ice," said Hawthorne.
CHL president Brad Treliving welcomed the ownership group to the League. "Today is a great day for hockey fans in Amarillo, as they welcome an ownership team with a strong commitment and desire to take Amarillo professional hockey to new heights."
The to-be-named club will take to the ice this October, facing long-time traditional foes such as New Mexico and Lubbock, as well as burgeoning rivals in Oklahoma City, Tulsa and Wichita brought on by the May, 2001 merger between the Central and Western Professional Hockey Leagues. Team ownership and staff will be in attendance at the upcoming Central Hockey League Spring Conference, beginning June 2nd and culminating with the CHL Awards Banquet on June 5th in Scottsdale, Arizona.
