Angels News Release

Amarillo, TX - After suffering their first loss of the season last week, the Amarillo Venom responded with a 66-41 thumping of the San Angelo Stampede Express Saturday night. The win clinches the Lonestar West division title and a home playoff game.

Amarillo and San Angelo's offenses thrived in the first frame, as both clubs scored on each offensive possession. After Stampede Express running back Derrick Ross scored the game's first touchdown, Venom wide receiver Anthony Clark caught a seven-yard pass for a score. Wideout Mike Malone answered for San Angelo with a touchdown of his own, but Amarillo running back Dontrell Moore countered with a one-yard rushing score to end the first quarter. Amarillo 14, San Angelo 13 after one stanza.

The Venom owned the second quarter, beginning with Amarillo's first defensive score of the season. Defensive back Kevin Patterson intercepted San Angelo quarterback Dustin Almond's pass in the back of the endzone and ran it back 50 yards for a touchdown. The Amarillo defense held San Angelo to back-to-back missed field goals, while Dontrell Moore and Anthony Clark collected their second touchdowns of the game. TyJuan Manning earned the Stampede Express' lone score of the quarter, as Amarillo led 35-20 at halftime.

The running back/wide receiver duo of Sha-Ron Edwards and Carl Johnson sprouted Amarillo's second-half surge, as Edwards scored twice and Johnson nabbed one receiving touchdown in the third quarter. The Venom defense held San Angelo to seven third-quarter points and led 55-27.

San Angelo garnered fourteen fourth-quarter points, to pull within seventeen, but were stopped on their final push by defensive lineman Brandon Jenkins' first sack of the game (second of the season). Carl Johnson added an additional score to help the Venom clinch a playoff spot and the 66-41 victory.

After not having a rushing score over his previous two games, Dontrell Moore scored twice in the first half via the rush...in only his third game with the Venom, Anthony Clark collected two first-half touchdowns and has five on the season...before tonight's two-touchdown effort, Carl Johnson's four touchdown receptions were all made on the road.
