Alliance Players Land on NFL Rosters

The Alliance of American Football suspended operations in early April, putting a sudden end to the league eight games into its 10-game season. Over 800 players, coaches, and front office staff lost their jobs; a sad day for everyone involved with the Alliance. Some players were signed by NFL teams and competed for roster spots in training camp and preseason games, however, and eight of them made it on to active NFL rosters. An additional nine former AAF players landed on NFL practice rosters.

Former AAF Players on NFL Active Rosters

Orlando Apollos quarterback Garret Gilbert - Cleveland Browns

Coached by Steve Spurrier, Gilbert passed for 2,152 yards, 13 touchdowns and just three interceptions. He also had one rushing touchdown and one receiving touchdown. Gilbert 27, spent time on the NFL Carolina Panthers active roster in the 2017 and 2018 seasons.

Orlando Apollos running back D'Ernest Johnson - Cleveland Browns

Johnson led the Apollos with 372 yards and had two rushing touchdowns. He also contributed 22 receptions for 220 yards and one touchdown. Johnson played college football at South Florida.

Birmingham Iron offensive lineman Brandon Greene - Carolina Panthers

Greene was on the practice roster of the Chicago Bears during the 2017 season and was promoted to the active roster at the end of the season. He played college football at Alabama.

Birmingham Iron Long Snapper Cole Mazza - Los Angeles Chargers

Mazza snapped balls to kicker Nick Novack who connected on 13 of 16 field goals. He also snapped to Iron punter Colton Schmidt. He played college football at Alabama.

Salt Lake Stallions defensive tackle Mike Purcell - Denver Broncos

Purcell had 33 total tackles and three sacks for the Stallions. He played in 25 games for San Francisco 49ers for three seasons from 2014 until 2016 after playing college football at Wyoming.

San Antonio Commanders defensive back De'Vante Bausby - Denver Broncos

Bausby had four interceptions and 26 total tackles for the Commanders. Bausby played college football at Pittsburg State. He debuted in the NFL by playing in four games with the Chicago Bears in the 2016 season. After spending 2017 on the Philadelphia Eagles practice roster, he played in six games with Philadelphia last season.

San Diego Fleet offensive lineman Daniel Brunskill - San Francisco 49ers

After a collegeiate career at San Diego State, Brunskill spent 2017 on the Atlanta Falcons practice roster.

San Diego Fleet defensive back Kameron Kelly - Pittsburgh Steelers

Kelly grabbed four interceptions, one of them returned 22 yards for a touchdown for the Fleet. He played college football at San Diego State and was signed by the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent in 2018 but was released before preseason began.

Former AAF Players on NFL Practice Rosters

Atlanta Legends defensive tackle Bijhon Jackson - Carolina Panthers

Jackson played in six of the eight Legends games and had two total tackles. In 2018 Jackson signed with the Los Angeles Chargers as an undrafted free agent and was waived before the 2018 season started. He played college football at Arkansas.

Arizona Hotshots quarterback John Wolford - Los Angeles Rams

Wolford threw for 1,617 yards, 14 touchdowns and seven interceptions for the Hotshots. He added 160 rushing yards and one touchdown on the ground. He played college football at Wake Forest and was in training camp with the New York Jets prior to the 2018 season.

Arizona Hotshots linebacker Sione Teuhema - Carolina Panthers

Teuhema finished with 19 total tackles and one sack for the Hotshots after coming out of Southeastern Louisiana.

Birmingham Iron linebacker Aaron Adeoye - Baltimore Ravens

Adeoye played in six of the eight Iron games, contributing 20 total tackles and half a sack. He played college football at Southeast Missouri State.

Salt Lake Stallions linebacker Chris Odom - Washington Redskins

Odom registered 10 total tackles and 2.5 sacks for the Stallions. He played in seven games for the Green Bay Packers in the 2017 season after his career at Arkansas State.

San Antonio Commanders quarterback Logan Woodside - Tennessee Titans

Former Toledo Rocket Woodside passed for 1,385 yards, seven touchdowns and eight interceptions with Salt Lake. He was drafted in the 7th round, 249th overall in the 2018 NFL Draft by the Cincinnati Bengals and was cut before the season.

San Antonio Commanders wide receiver Greg Ward - Philadelphia Eagles

Ward caught 22 passes for 214 yards for the Commanders. He also scored on a 79-yard punt return for a touchdown. He spent the 2017 season on the practice roster of the Philadelphia Eagles. Ward enjoyed a varried college career at Houston. As a receiver, he had 53 receptions for 667 yards with eight touchdowns during his sophomore season. He converted to quarterback for his junior season and threw for 3,596 yards and 32 touchdowns. He also rushed for 1,212 yards with 18 touchdowns.

San Diego Fleet offensive lineman Jeremiah Kolone - Los Angeles Rams

Kolone was on the Rams practice roster for the 2018 season. He played college football at San Jose State.
