Waikiki won its third game in four chances, and right fielder Alfredo Silverio extended his league-high hitting streak to nine games as the BeachBoys defeated Honolulu, 8-4, in seven innings this afternoon at Waipahu's Hans L'Orange Park.
Silverio singled and scored twice while Cincinnati's Todd Frazier notched two hits including his sixth double of the season to help Waikiki improve to 4-5. Roger Kieschnick and Johan Limonta chipped in two hits apiece for the BeachBoys, and teammate Yuji Onizaki of the Tokyo Yakult Swallows went 2-3 with a team-high two RBIs.
Honolulu (5-3-1) scored all its runs in the home half of the fifth inning including a pair on a Shintaro Masuda single. Ryo Hijirisawa of the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles led the Sharks with two singles, and notched an RBI in the losing effort.
Waikiki starter Mitsuo Yoshikawa (1-0) earned the win after striking out four and surrendering four runs on as many hits through 4 2/3 innings.
Johnny Venters (1-1) took the loss, allowing three runs on five hits through 2 2/3 innings. Former Hawaii Pacific University standout and current Cleveland Indians prospect Kaimi Mead tossed 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief and lowered his ERA to 3.86.
Both squads return to Hans L'Orange Park tomorrow at 3 p.m. for the second game in a three-game set. The contest is scheduled for seven innings.
