Published on August 11, 2008 under Major League Lacrosse (MLL) News Release

BOSTON, Mass. (August 11, 2008) - It's taken four years, but one of legendary MLL face-off specialist Paul Cantabene's records was surpassed this past weekend by two players, Long Island's Peter Vlahakis and Rochester's Alex Smith. In the final weekend of action, both Vlahakis and Smith surpassed Cantabene's record for most face-off wins in a single season.

Cantabene's record of 238 face-off wins was set in 2004 when Cantabene was a member of the Baltimore Bayhawks.

Smith and Vlahakis went into the final weekend of the regular season on the verge of Cantabene's record with Vlahakis sitting at 217 wins and Smith at 226.

Smith, the 2007 Cascade Rookie of the Year, won 23 face-offs against the Machine in Chicago on Sunday. Vlahakis won 27 face-offs against the Washington Bayhawks on Saturday. Smith finished the 2008 regular season with a total 249 wins and Vlahakis finished with 244.

Cantabene remains the League's all-time leader in face-off wins, with 1015.
