Albany Empire Host Second Ever Open Player Tryouts
ALBANY -The Albany Empire hosted the team's second open player tryouts on Saturday morning seeking the best undiscovered talent to join the team for the 2019 season. Training camp for the upcoming season is slated to begin in mid-March.
Players from all over the country brought their talents to the Halfmoon Sportsplex in Clifton Park for an early Saturday morning tryout with the hopes of being brought into training camp. Approximately 100 hopeful players showed up for the tryouts participating in drills such as the 40-yard dash, shuttle run and position specific exercises. All positions (Quarterback, Fullback, Wide Receiver, Offensive/Defensive Line, Linebacker, Defensive Back and Kicker) were evaluated.
"We came into today in search of the best unknown football talent," said Rob Keefe, Head Coach of the Albany Empire. "With a year under our belt now, people in the Capital Region understand the high level of talent that we put on the field. That definitely showed through the competition that came to today's workout."
Keefe, a firm believer of the open tryout process, made his debut in Arena Football with the Columbus Destroyers after making the cut from an open workout. The Empire coaching staff is confident that there are hidden gems at every tryout and that there is talent that can compete for a spot on the 24-man season roster. As a result of the Empire's first ever open tryout prior to the inaugural season, four players were invited to training camp.
The Empire coaching staff maintained an open mind heading into tryouts looking for the top talent to put the Albany Empire in the best position to compete for an ArenaBowl Championship in 2019. The coaches will take some time to evaluate the players and as the league begins assigning players, and those who Keefe and his staff thinks made the cut will be given an AFL contract and brought to training camp.
With the first tryout of the Empire's 2019 season in the books, the coaching staff will soon begin recruiting players to the Capital Region and make up a roster with a mix of league veterans, rookies, and local talent.
"Overall, it was a great workout as we were able to evaluate these guys who fought hard to compete for their position in an Empire uniform," said Keefe. "We have proven that we have created an environment that breeds success. The energy, enthusiasm, and skill that was on display today gives our coaching staff a lot of options to sift through as we begin the process of putting together the best possible roster to take into camp and prepare for another successful season."
