AIFL Saddened By News of Renegades Player Death
January 30, 2006 - American Indoor Football Association (AIFA) News Release
The American Indoor Football League was saddened to hear of the death of Rome Renegades fullback/defensive lineman Joe Killins and offers its prayers and support to both the organization and Killins' family, AIFL President/Founder Andrew G. Haines said Saturday.
Killins was pronounced dead early Friday morning in Birmingham, Ala. He was 25.
"Though I did not meet him personally, I understand that Joe Killins was a player that was loved by his teammates and the fans of Rome,'' Haines said. "My best wishes go to Renegades coach Dave Humphreys, the Renegades' staff and players, and especially his fiancé and daughters."
Killins was a stalwart on both sides of the ball for the Renegades in 2005, rushing four four touchdowns while registering 52.5 tackles, three sacks and an interception on defense. The Renegades advanced to the championship game of the National Indoor Football League last year before joining the AIFL this season.
The AIFL's other 15 teams have sent messages of support to the Renegades and some have posted messages on their respective web sites' home pages. Fans have expressed their condolences on the league's website message board.
Now in its second season, the AIFL has expanded from six to 16 teams situation in the eastern United States. Kickoff for year two is March 25, with the Richmond Bandits defending their inaugural season championship.
