AHL American Hockey League

AHL quick hits

April 24, 2004 - American Hockey League (AHL) News Release

The road team has won each of the first five games of the series; to continue its season, Manchester will have to continue the trend. The Monarchs visit Worcester tonight (7:05 ET) on the brink of elimination after Thursday's triple-overtime setback, but the IceCats haven't scored a playoff goal on home ice in more than 13 periods since 2002, and are 3-11 all-time with a chance to wrap up a series. Manchester's Pavel Rosa shares the AHL playoff scoring lead with nine points.

In danger of falling into an 0-2 series hole, Milwaukee powered its way to a 6-0 win last night. Scottie Upshall netted a hat trick in Game 2 and Darren Haydar added two goals and two assists, while the Admirals went 5-for-11 on the power play. Wade Flaherty earned the shutout with 22 saves. The series shifts to Cincinnati Gardens for Game 3 tonight (7:35 ET, 6:35 CT); Milwaukee won a league-best 23 road games during the regular season.

Chicago brought an emphatic finish to Grand Rapids' 2003-04 season with an 8-2 rout at Allstate Arena last night, capping a four-game sweep of their arch-rivals. Derek MacKenzie led the offensive onslaught with a hat trick, Stephen Baby had a goal and two assists and Zdenek Blatny recorded three assists. It was revenge for Chicago, which was swept out of last year's postseason by the Griffins.

Matt Hussey scored twice in his first appearance of the series and Andy Chiodo stopped 23 shots as Wilkes-Barre/Scranton dominated Bridgeport, 5-0, to square their East Division semifinal at three games apiece. Konstantin Koltsov recorded a goal and an assist as the Penguins continued their success against a Sound Tigers defense that allowed a league-record 140 goals in the regular season; the Pens have scored 20 times in six games of the series.

Jozef Balej scored 8:28 into the second overtime period last night to give Hartford a 2-1 win in Portland and a 2-1 series lead. Balej, who has scored three of the Wolf Pack's four goals in the series, had been cut by a Jakub Cutta high stick two and a half minutes earlier, resulting in a major power play advantage for the Pack. Jason LaBarbera finished with 43 saves for Hartford, outdueling Pirates counterpart Maxime Ouellet (30 saves).

Brad Moran's second straight two-goal night propelled Syracuse to a 3-2 win over Rochester and gave the Crunch a commanding 3-1 series lead in the North Division semifinals. Moran netted both of his goals on the power play in the second period, and also assisted on Jeremy Reich's goal earlier in the frame. Donald MacLean added two assists and Karl Goehring made 32 saves for Syracuse, which has won three times in the series by identical 3-2 scores.

Quintin Laing scored at the 9:51 mark of overtime as Norfolk evened its series with a 2-1 win in Game 2 at Philadelphia. The Admirals were held to just 16 shots on goal in the game, while Craig Anderson made 28 saves in his first appearance of this postseason. Ian MacNeil opened the scoring with a shorthanded goal, his second marker in as many games, and Ajay Baines answered for Norfolk in the second period.
