AHL honors league executives
Published on July 12, 2002 under American Hockey League (AHL) News Release
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. . . . American Hockey League President and CEO David Andrews has announced that St. John's Maple Leafs Vice President Glenn Stanford has been named the recipient of the 2001-02 James C. Hendy Award, given annually to an outstanding league executive, while Springfield Falcons President and General Manager Bruce Landon has been honored with the Thomas Ebright Award in recognition of career contributions to the AHL. The announcements came at the conclusion of the Board of Governors meeting in Hilton Head Island, S.C.
Glenn Stanford has been the vice president of hockey operations for the St. John's Maple Leafs since the team's inception in 1991. The 2001-02 season in Newfoundland was highlighted by the grand opening of Mile One Stadium, of which Stanford also serves as general manager. The arena received worldwide attention when it served as a shelter for thousands of stranded air travelers on Sept. 11. Just days later, Mile One hosted the Toronto Maple Leafs' training camp, including a pre-season game against the Montreal Canadiens. The building also served as the site for the 2002 AHL All-Star Classic in February and the prestigious Juno Awards ceremony in April. Under Stanford's leadership, the Maple Leafs' transition to their new facility was seamless, with the club experiencing a 54 percent increase in attendance over the previous season. He also continued to oversee the Leafs Foundation, the driving force of the team's community exposure which he helped create in 1994.
Bruce Landon recently completed his 20th season as an AHL general manager in Springfield, and his eighth as president of the Falcons. He began his association with Springfield 33 years ago as a rookie goaltender, later helping the club to a Calder Cup championship in 1971. Landon joined the Indians' front office after his retirement in 1977 and quickly became one of the most respected hockey and business minds in the game, presiding over the club's public relations, marketing and sales responsibilities before moving into the general manager's office in 1982. One of eight GM's in league history to oversee back-to-back Calder Cup champions (1990, 1991), Landon has served on the league's Board of Governors since 1994.
The James C. Hendy Award is named for the late Jim Hendy, a Hockey Hall of Famer and long-time statistician and historian for the AHL who won four Calder Cups as general manager of the original Cleveland Barons. The Thomas Ebright Award honors the former owner and governor of the Baltimore Skipjacks and Portland Pirates, who passed away in 1997.
