The Rochester Knighthawks used an eight-goal run bridging the second and third quarters en route to a 20-10 victory over the Philadelphia Wings on Friday afternoon.
Former Wing forward Dan Dawson lead Rochester's offense to its highest output of the season, surpassing their goal total from the previous two games combined. Dawson matched his point total from the first four games with a game-high 11 points (4+7).
The Knighthawks (2-3) never trailed, taking an early 1-0 lead as Johnny Powless extended his goal-scoring streak to 10 games. Mike Accursi netted the first two of his four goals in the opening period as Rochester took a 3-1 lead.
Rochester scored eight of the nine goals tallied in the second quarter. Defenseman Tyler Burton opened a streak of six straight goals to propel the Knighthawks to an 11-2 halftime lead. Dawson scored back-to-back goals 35 seconds apart and Accursi completed the hat trick 7:06 into the second quarter.
Stephen Keogh scored his second goal of the second quarter 36 seconds later, swimming over his defender for a clear lane to the net. Dawson completed a full court pass to Joe Walters, who gave the Knighthawks a nine-goal advantage at the break.
Defenders Scott Campbell and Brad Self capped off the eight-goal run with one each inside the first minute of the third quarter. Philadelphia (2-3) then scored three straight, reducing the deficit to 13-6.
Dawson and Casey Powell each scored a pair in the fourth. Rochester led by as much as 12 in the final quarter, but two power play goals from Kevin Ross and a shorthanded goal from Brodie Merrill cut the deficit to 10.
Matt Vinc made 49 saves on 59 shots for a .831 save percentage. Dawson (4+7), Cody Jamieson (3+4), Walters (1+5) and Accursi (4+0) led the Knighthawks offense. The Wings were led by Merrill with three goals while Hall and Ross finished with two apiece.
The Knighthawks will fly to Buffalo to face the Bandits on Saturday, February 9th at 7:30p.m. The game will be a rematch of Rochester's Week #3 loss at home, which it lost 14-13 on a behind-the-back shot with 11.8 seconds remaining.
