IN THE NFL
Former Iowa Barnstormer QB Kurt Warner led the St. Louis Rams to victory
with a 328-yard, four TD passing performance... in the same contest,
Dolphins WR Oronde Gadsden (1998 AFL Rookie of the Year) totaled three
receptions for 29 yards in the Miami loss... in New England's win over Indy,
receiver David Patten (1996 Albany Firebirds) had one catch for 17 yards...
a former AFL Defensive Player of the Year, Johnnie Harris (1998, Tampa Bay)
recorded a pair of tackles for the Raiders in Oakland's win over Seattle.
FAN-FRIENDLY, EASY ON THE WALLET
Arena Football's "Fans' Bill of Rights" states... "We believe that every Fan
is entitled to a total entertainment experience at an affordable cost for
all members of the family from the time they arrive at the arena to the time
they depart." Well, AFL research from the 2001 seasons states it best... in
U.S. dollars, the AFL's Fan Cost Index (FCI) based on an average ticket
price - four tickets, parking, two beers, four sodas, four hot dogs and two
caps for a family of four -- is $164.12... that's little more than $40 per
person... comparable FCI calculations for other pro sports? Now, these
numbers also figure in two game-day programs, but the NHL's averages more
than $66 per person... the NBA's, more than $70 per person... and the NFL's,
more than $75 per person.
ON THE AIR
Marcum on the mic... Storm Head Coach Tim Marcum co-hosts "In the Locker
Room" with Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Karl "The Truth" Williams on
WTSP-10 (CBS) each Sundays at 11:30 a.m... the half-hour Bucs show presents
player interviews, reviews of the previous week's game and previews and
predictions of the upcoming game.
Deejay Rampage... Aside from celebrating his team's ArenaBowl XV championship, Grand Rapids DS Hassan Shamsid-Deen has been busy... as a radio deejay.... western Michigan locals can listen to him every evening, Monday through Friday from 6-10 p.m. on WJNZ-1680AM.
GIVING BACK
Ironman football... the Gladiators announced Miles Austin from Garfield (NJ)
High as the recipient of this week's "njgladiators.com Ironman of the Week"
award.... Austin helped lead his team to a 31-7 victory over Pompton Lakes
High with four receptions for 62 yards and one TD... the senior Ironman also
grabbed one INT, registered a sack and contributed five tackles... ... and
returned a punt 80yards for a score... as the award winner, he will receive
a plaque and four tickets to a 2002 New Jersey Gladiators home game... at
the end of the high school season a player will be selected as the
"njgladiators.com Ironman of the Year", and will be awarded a trophy.
Learning the ropes from... the Cobras, who spent last Sunday afternoon teaching kids the fundamentals of football at a free football clinic sponsored by UPN-TV and Subway... Head Coach Mike Neu, along with defensive coordinator Bret Munsey, WR/LB Cornelius White, OS Aaron Bailey, lineman Silas Demary, and K Brian Schmitz hit the gridiron to lend their expertise to kids at Durham County Stadium.
Flying the coop... of Conseco Fieldhouse, the Indiana Firebirds make another stop on their 2001 Indiana High School Football Tour this Friday (7 p.m. kickoff) at Plainfield High just outside Indianapolis...
TO TELL THE TRUTH
"I played in a dome in college. I played inside in Arena Football. I just
love playing inside. It's my element, it's what I'm comfortable with."
-- NFL QB Kurt Warner (Iowa Barnstormers, 1995-97), who has completed more
than 70-percent of his pass attempts for 957 yards and 8 TDs (three INTs) in
just three games. As an NFL starter, Warner is 17-1 during the regular
season (undefeated at home), when playing indoors. The one loss came at the
hands of the Detroit Lions (1999), who host Warner and the Rams this Monday
night on ABC inside the Silverdome. (Overall, when Warner starts indoors
(regular season), he wins 81% of the time; his combined indoor regular
season record: 47-11.)
