FRIDAY'S GAME

Grand Rapids Rampage 57, COLORADO CRUSH 55 (Attendance 17,433): Grand Rapids' BRIAN GOWINS connected on a 23-yard field goal with nine seconds remaining in the game to give the Rampage their second straight win.

SUNDAY'S GAMES

Indiana Firebirds 65, NEW YORK DRAGONS 54 (Attendance 11,216): Game MVP RAYMOND PHILYAW passed for three touchdowns and ran for two more to lead the Firebirds over the Dragons and to a 2-0 start this season.

ARIZONA RATTLERS 46, Las Vegas Gladiators 42 (Attendance 11,826): Arizona collected four interceptions against the Gladiators, including a pair by Ironman of the Game RANDY GATEWOOD, as the Rattlers earned their first victory of the year.

DALLAS DESPERADOS 46, Chicago Rush 38 (Attendance 13,552): Dallas quarterback JIM KUBIAK passed for 238 yards and five touchdowns, including a two apiece to Game MVP ANDY MCCULLOUGH and DIALLEO BURKS, as the Desperados boosted their record to 2-0.

LOS ANGELES AVENGERS 73, San Jose SaberCats 72 (Attendance 14,992): MATHIAS VAVAO scored on a one-yard run and, with one second remaining, the Avengers made good on a two-point conversion – a TONY GRAZIANI-strike to GREG HOPKINS – to narrowly defeat defending ArenaBowl champion San Jose. The two teams combined for 145 points, the eleventh highest-scoring game (tie) in AFL history.

ORLANDO PREDATORS 54, Tampa Bay Storm 51 (Attendance 13,521): Orlando quarterback JAY GRUDEN threw for 330 yards and six touchdowns, including four to CORY FLEMING, as the Predators defeated archrival Tampa Bay and now lead the regular season series, 13-12.

BUFFALO DESTROYERS 44, Carolina Cobras 16 (Attendance 8,067): JEFF LOOTS passed for 200 yards and four touchdowns – two apiece to GUNNARD TWYNER and CORNELIUS WHITE – to guide Buffalo to its first win of the season.

DETROIT FURY 38, Georgia Force 31 (Attendance 13,087): Detroit's defense held Georgia scoreless in the fourth quarter and allowed just seven points in the second half as the Fury snapped a 12-game losing streak dating back to last season. With the win, Detroit Head Coach AL LUGINBILL claimed his first career AFL coaching victory.
