AFL Collectable Player of the Week
February 22, 2006 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I) News Release
DALLAS (February 21, 2006) --- When Shane Stafford found his Tampa Bay Storm trailing by almost four touchdowns midway through the second quarter of Sunday's grudge match against the Orlando Predators, he didn't panic. He performed -- miraculously well.
Facing a 40-14 first-half deficit, Stafford rallied his troops in a thrilling comeback that ultimately fell short when Predators kicker Jay Taylor booted the winning field goal in overtime of a 67-64 loss. But the fact that Tampa Bay even managed to take the game to OT was a tribute to its never-say-die quarterback, who finished with a dazzling statistical line that included 36-of-52 passing for a career-high 458 yards and eight touchdowns.
For his performance, Stafford has been selected as the Beckett.com AFL Collectible Player of the Week for Week 4.
Stafford's eighth touchdown pass of the day, a 22-yarder to WR/LB Lawrence Samuels as the fourth quarter expired, brought the Storm to within 64-62. Stafford then ensured extra time when he ran in the ensuing two-point conversion attempt.
For the record, Stafford's 458 yards passing Sunday were the third most in AFL single-game history.
