July 31, 2007 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release
CHICAGO - Tulsa wide receiver/defensive back JEFF HUGHLEY, Oklahoma City wide receiver JARRAIL JACKSON and Central Valley linebacker WES BORBA have been named the U.S. Army Ironman, Schutt Offensive Player and ADT Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, for Week 18 of the 2007 season. In addition to these three awards, the af2 is also highlighting the player who makes the best catch of the week. The Cutters Catch of the Week Award for Week 18 goes to Louisville wide receiver Tiger Jones.
U.S. ARMY IRONMAN OF THE WEEK
Hughley (5-8, 165, Averett), in his first af2 season, had an impressive all-around effort for Tulsa in the team's 64-54 victory against South Georgia in Week 18. The rookie from Averett made his presence felt on offense with five catches for 53 yards and two touchdowns. Hughley was also an impact player on special teams with 159 kick return yards for a total of 212 all-purpose yards. He also got into the act on defense by recording two solo stops. This is the first Ironman of the Week Award of Hughley's career. Offensively, Hughley has been the Talons' top overall performer in 2007, leading the squad in scoring (198 points), total touchdowns (33 - 26 receiving, 3 rushing, 3 kick return, 1 INT return), receptions (84), receiving yards (1,069), receiving TDs (26), kick return touchdowns (3 - T1st in af2), kick return yards (1,363 - 4th in af2) and all-purpose yards (2,515 - 6th in af2). Hughley has also contributed on defense with 20.5 total tackles and one interception return for a score.
SCHUTT OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Jackson (5-11, 190, Oklahoma) put on a spectacular individual showing for Oklahoma City in the team's 76-69 loss to Lubbock this past week. The fifth-year af2 veteran from Oklahoma shattered the league record for most all-purpose yards in one game with 440 against the Renegades. Jackson did all he could for the Yard Dawgz, scoring 44 total points in the contest on seven total touchdowns and a two-point conversion. Lining up as a receiver, Jackson caught nine passes for 128 yards and four touchdowns. He also recorded a game-high 51 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Jackson capped off the outing with 261 kick return yards, including a 56-yard kick return for a score in the fourth quarter. His scoring outburst also put him over the 900-point plateau for his career, becoming just the fourth player in league history to hit that mark.
ADT DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Borba (6-3, 215, St. Mary's College), in his fourth af2 season, had a stellar night defensively in Week 18 for Central Valley in the team's, 54-20, home victory against West Division rival Bakersfield. The former St. Mary's standout was a playmaker for the Coyotes all evening, scoring three defensive touchdowns in the decision. Two of Borba's defensive touchdowns came on fumble recoveries of 12 yards and four yards, respectively. The veteran linebacker also found the end zone with a six-yard interception return. Borba added 6.0 total tackles as well. This is the second weekly af2 award of Borba's career. He earned the U.S. Army Ironman of the Week Award earlier this season for his strong overall play in Week 2.
CUTTERS CATCH OF THE WEEK
Jones (5-11, 195, Louisville), who is in his first af2 campaign, earned the Cutters Catch of the Week Award, an honor that emerged last year to highlight the player who makes the best catch of the week. Jones' catch was crucial as the rookie from Louisville snared the game-winning scoring pass from four yards out with just 11 seconds to play to fuel the Fire's 44-40 home victory against Tennessee Valley. Jones' catch capped an outstanding individual effort that included 14 catches for 180 receiving yards and five touchdowns. Jones finished his first season with 1,897 receiving yards (2nd in af2), 142 receptions (3rd in af2) and 37 receiving touchdowns (T6th in af2).
