af2 announces week five honors

May 3, 2005 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release

CHICAGO - Bossier-Shreveport offensive specialist BO SMITH, Manchester wide receiver/linebacker J.J. MCKELVEY and Albany defensive specialist TRAVIS COLEMAN have been named the Offensive Player, U.S. Army Ironman and ADT Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, for Week 5 of the 2005 season.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Smith (6-10, 190), in his third season, led the Battle Wings to their first victory of the season against the Rio Grande Valley Dorados Monday night with another offensive explosion. In a 77-69 decision, the speedy Smith caught six passes for 125 yards and five touchdowns. As a kick returner he totaled 125 yards, including a 56-yard runback for a touchdown. His 36 points is the second highest single-game effort of the season behind Kevin Prentiss of Memphis who totaled 48 on April 8. Counting his 225 all-purpose yards against the Dorados, Smith now has 607 all-purpose yards over the past three weeks. He also has scored 14 touchdowns during that span, putting him among the league's top three in total scoring. Smith, who never played college ball and only played one year in high school, was also honored as Offensive Player of the Week during Week 6 of last season. He is the first Battle Wings player to earn a weekly mention this season.

U.S. ARMY IRONMAN OF THE WEEK

McKelvey (6-4, 225, Clemson), playing in his second season, helped the Wolves dispose of the Macon Knights by scoring points on both sides of the ball in a 56-32 win Friday night. On offense McKelvey caught six passes for 46 yards and two touchdowns. On the defensive side he made one solo tackle, recorded a sack and intercepted a pass for a 25-yard score. His big plays helped turned a close game into runaway. With Manchester ahead 26-10 at the half, McKelvey came out in the second half and scored the next three touchdowns for the Wolves to make the score 46-16. McKelvey's efforts helped the Wolves to their third straight win and their best start since the 2003 season. This is the first-ever weekly award for McKelvey and the second for a Wolves player this season. QB Jake Eaton won Offensive Player of the Week in Week 3

ADT DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Coleman (6-0, 185, Hampton), in his second season, displayed a brilliant defensive effort in the Conquest's 48-39 win over the South Georgia Wildcats on Saturday night. In a game decided by just nine points, Coleman was responsible for 12 by intercepting two passes and running them back for touchdowns. His first pick came at the end of the first quarter. Trailing 14-0 and having turned the ball over to the Wildcats, Coleman got the Conquest on the board by stepping in front of a Bobby Pesavanto pass and running it back 25 yards for a score. His second interception and touchdown came in the third quarter, capping a 27-0 run that put the Conquest in front for the first time in the game. Coleman also registered six solo tackles and an additional pass break-up on the night as the Conquest earned their first win of the season. This is the first weekly award of Coleman's career and the first for a Conquest player since Week 11 of last season when Tony Locke received the Offensive Player of the Week.
