Admirals lose to Penguins

December 3, 2005 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Norfolk Admirals News Release

The Admirals dropped another close decision to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins 3-2 on Saturday night.

Norfolk quickly jumped out in front in the opening period. Quintin Laing dumped the puck into the Penguins' zone from center ice. The puck ricocheted off the end boards to Martin St. Pierre at the blue line. St. Pierre sent a slap shot that eluded Wilkes-Barre netminder Andy Chiodo at 1:45. The Penguins tied it up on the power play eight minutes later as Tomas Surovy's shot through traffic beat Norfolk goalie Corey Crawford at 9:44. The game was tied 1-1 at the first break.

Wilkes-Barre un-tied the game in the second period on a Kenny Corupe goal at 7:43. The Admirals nearly deadlocked the game at two goals apiece with five minutes to go in the second stanza. Milan Bartovic was awarded a penalty shot after being tripped on a breakaway. On the attempt, Bartovic beat Chiodo but not the stick-side post, and the game remained 2-1 in favor of the Penguins at the start of the third period.

The Admirals tied the game early in the final frame on the power play. Mark Cullen sent a cross-ice pass to Carl Corazzini at the face-off circle to the right of Chiodo. Corazzini sent a one-timer that sailed over Chiodo's leg at 1:34. However, the Penguins would win the game on a five-on-three power play. Chris Kelleher's slap shot from the point was tipped into the net by Ryan Stone with 1:47 to go, and the Penguins held on to win 3-2.

Corey Crawford made 22 saves and was saddled with the loss. Dany Sabourin stopped 19 Admirals' shots and picked up the win for Wilkes-Barre.

Norfolk was 1-5 on the power play while Wilkes-Barre/Scranton was 2-8.
