ABA takes its game to Mongolia
Published on June 3, 2005 under American Basketball Association (ABA) News Release
Mongolia. Tom Chichester, ABA Director of Officials, filed a report of the second day of activities from the ABA (and Kentucky Colonels) visit to Mongolia. "Led a discussion forum with Stephanie Roach (Kentucky Colonels owner) and Tree Rollins. In attendance were several Mongolian coaches, officials, teachers interested in basketball and ABA practices. It was a question/answer format facilitated by an intepreter, as many of the attendees did not speak English. Afterward, a few participants with some command of the language coupled with a deep desire for any knowledge of the game, came forward with more questions. The session concluded with a shooting roundabout that thrilled the audience. By this time, the gym was filled with kids and others who wanted to see some live basketball action. These people were literally in awe of what they saw on the court. One of the discussion participants said, "This is unbelievable to me. I have seen American basketball on TV and in newsprint, but never with my own eyes!" The interest and support here is extraordinary to say the least.
In the evening, the Delphid Group, which is sponsoring the trip, hosted a reception for us. It was a pleasant gathering of sports enthusiasts including the coach from the Mongolian Basketball team and one of his players, a member of Parliament with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who is a huge basketball fan and a graduate of Columbia University in NY, a representative from the American Embassy, and several members of the TV station who will be interviewing us after tonight's game."
Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams. For information on professional minor leagues, please see OSC's basketball section.
