ABA on the road again, this time to Nashville
Published on February 5, 2004 under American Basketball Association (ABA) News Release
Indianapolis, IN. Joe Newman, Co-Founder of the ABA professional basketball league today announced the fifth expansion team for next season - Nashville. According to Newman, "We are extremely pleased to have a group headed by pop/rock artist Sally Anthony. The ABA is sports and entertainment - and we know that Nashville will be one of our premiere markets based on the plans presented to us by Sally and her partners."
Ms. Anthony stated, "Growing up in Indiana, I've always had a passion for the game of basketball. Like going to a live concert, there is such energy and excitement involving the game. I've been living in Nashville on and off over the last six years and I feel like the city is missing two very important ingredients - a pro basketball team and women running the game. Knowing that I am joining two other ABA owners like Mary Liss in Portland and Stephanie Roach in Louisville makes it even more exciting for me. And you can bet the rivalry between Nashville and Louisville will be something else."
Sally added, "The ABA is one of the few places that will give a woman a chance to own a team and make a difference in the community. That's why my partners and I are so excited about being able to help bring Nashville it's own ABA team. And to my co-women owners - congratulations, ladies, we're moving up in the world of athletics and music."
Anthony, who was named 1 of 10 emerging independent artists in music by Jim Beam, has a grassroots fanbase that include people on her mailing list and numerous fan sites dedicated to her music and style. Anthony's music has been played on Top 40 radio stations and has been featured in numerous magazines including JANE and LAUNCH. In addition, she has worked with various artists including Enrique Iglesias, James Taylor, Christina Aguilera, Tom Petty, The Wallflowers, Chris Isaak, Merchant, the Black Crowes and Oasis.
Newman concluded, "We promised rapid-fire expansion in the league so that we could have divisional play next season. We will be announcing additional teams shortly. Specific details relating to the Nashville team will be announced shortly. For more information, contact info@nashvillehoops.com.
