AAF Coaches by the Numbers

The Alliance of American Football has named its eight coaches for the league's inaugural season which begins in February. To recap, Steve Spurrier will lead Orlando, Brad Childress helms Atlanta, Mike Singletary lands at Memphis, Craig Erickson commands Salt Lake City, Rick Neuheisel coaches Phoenix, Mike Martz takes charge at San Diego, Tim Lewis guides Birmingham and Mike Riley directs the fortunes of San Antonio.

Here they are, by the numbers.

1 - Rose Bowl MVP award, captured by Phoenix head coach Rick Neuheisel won playing quarterback for UCLA in 1984.

1 - Pro Football Hall of Fame members, in Memphis head coach Mike Singletary in 1998.

1 - Super Bowls won as a player, earned by Memphis head coach Mike Singletary in Super Bowl XX on January 26, 1986 when the Chicago Bears defeated the New England Patriots 46-10.

1 - Super Bowls won as a coach, for San Diego head coach Mike Martz as offensive coordinator for the St. Louis Rams they won Super Bowl XXXIV on January 30, 2000 when the Rams defeated the Tennessee Titans 23-16.

2 - CFL Grey Cup championships won as a coach, for San Antonio head coach Mike Riley for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. They defeated the British Columbia Lions 22-21 in 1988. In 1990 they dominated the Edmonton Eskimos 50-11.

2 - ACC head coach of the Year awards, recognizing Orlando head coach Steve Spurrier won for Duke in 1988 and 1989.

3 - Draft position of Orlando head coach Steve Spurrier when he was selected as a quarterback by the San Francisco 49ers in the first round, third overall in the 1967 NFL/AFL Draft.

3 - College Football National Championships won, two by Salt Lake City head coach Dennis Erickson for Miami in 1989 and 1991 and one by Steve Spurrier for Florida in 1996.

3 - Big East Coach of the Year awards won, by Salt Lake City head coach Dennis Erickson for Miami in 1991, 1992 and 1994.

4 - Pac-12 Coach of the Year honors won, three times by Dennis Erickson 1988, 2000, 2007. One by Mike Riley in 2008.

5 - Number of Pro Bowls for Philadelphia Eagles QB Donovan McNabb between 1999-2005 when Atlanta head coach Brad Childress served as his quarterback coach and offensive coordinator.

6 - NFL teams coached: Brad Childress - Minnesota, Mike Riley - San Diego, Mike Singletary - San Francisco, Mike Martz - St. Louis, and Dennis Erickson - Seattle and San Francisco.

7 - The jersey number Phoenix head coach Rick Neuheisel wore for the San Antonio Gunslingers of the United States Football League during the 1984 and 1985 season.

7 - SEC Coach of the Year honors won, Orlando head coach Steve Spurrier (1990, 1991, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2005 and 2010).

10 - Number of Pro Bowls Memphis head coach Mike Singletary was named to from 1983 till 1992.

11 - Draft position of Birmingham head coach Tim Lewis when he was taken as a cornerback by the Green Bay Packers in the first round, 11th overall, in the 1983 NFL Draft.

11 - Total wins by San Antonio head coach Mike Riley for the World League of American Football's San Antonio Riders in the 1991 and 1992 seasons.

14 - Different college football teams coached by Steve Spurrier (Duke, Florida and South Carolina), Rick Neuheisel (Colorado, Washington and UCLA) Mike Riley (Oregon State twice and Nebraska) and Dennis Erickson (Idaho twice, Wyoming, Washington State, Miami, Oregon State and Arizona State)

16 - Career interceptions by Birmingham head coach Tim Lewis when he played for Green Bay.

19 - Career sacks by Memphis head coach Mike Singletary for the NFL Chicago Bears.

26 - Jersey number worn by Birmingham head coach Tim Lewis for the Packers

35 - Total regular season wins by Orlando head coach Steve Spurrier for the USFL's Tampa Bay Bandits in 1983, 1984 and 1985

38 - Draft position of Memphis head coach Mike Singletary when he was taken by the Chicago Bears as a linebacker in the second round of the 1981 NFL Draft

40 - Total wins by AAF San Antonio head coach Mike Riley for the four seasons he coached the CFL's Winnipeg Blue Bombers from 1987 till 1990.

50 - Jersey number worn by Memphis head coach Mike Singletary for the Chicago Bears

51 - Games played for Green Bay by Birmingham head coach Tim Lewis until a neck injury ended his NFL career.

64 - Average age of the eight AAF coaches. Orlando's Steve Spurrier is the oldest at 73. Birmingham's Tim Lewis is the youngest at 56.
