Tampa Bay Storm News Release

TAMPA BAY - Tampa Bay Storm quarterback Stephen Wasil announced his retirement today. He submitted his official retirement papers to the League office and will now enter into a new phase of his life as a football coach at his alma mater Albion College in Albion, Michigan.

"While it is always tough to lose a player like Stephen, particularly at quarterback, we are proud of his decision and new role," said vice president of football operations Jeff Gooch. "Our aim is to help develop and put our players in a position to succeed in the future and Stephen is on his way to doing so."

Wasil (6-foot-3, 220 lbs., Albion (MI)) spent three seasons in the Arena Football League (2010-2012) and the 2012 season with the Tampa Bay Storm. He started in 14 games and completed 294-of-489 passes for 3,664 yards and 71 touchdowns with only 17 interceptions. Wasil also added 140 yards on the ground and 19 rushing touchdowns, the second most rushing touchdowns in a single-season in franchise history.

He was the first player to throw for more than 300 yards in a starting debut and the second player ever to account for 10 total touchdowns in a single-game. He played at Albion from 2002 to 2005 and was named MVP of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) his senior season. Wasil holds or has previously held a total of nine all-time records including those for most passing yards in a Game (412), passing yards in a season (3,313), and touchdowns in a season (33).

"I enjoyed my playing time and all of the experiences and friendships I was able to build," said Wasil. "The fans in Tampa Bay were great and I want to thank the Storm organization and Coach Ewart for the opportunity that they provided to me."

However I am excited to begin a new chapter in my life as I get started on a new path with a new career. It is great to be able to begin this next phase at my alma mater [Albion] with people I am familiar with. The AFL was a stepping stone that has helped prepare me for my future as a coach."

Wasil will serve as the quarterbacks coach for Albion head coach Craig Rundle. He will be responsible for the development of the quarterbacks and expected to contribute to the game planning for the passing game of the Britons.
