FC Kansas City Welcomes First Draft Class

Prairie Village, KS - Fans of Kansas City women's soccer have their first draft class to cheer for. FC Kansas City made four selections in the inaugural National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) draft. Kristie Mewis of Boston College was the team's first pick, followed by Erika Tymrak (Univ. of Florida), Whitney Berry (Univ. of Kansas) and Nia Williams (Missouri State University).

KRISTIE MEWIS

Position: Midfielder

Height: 5-8

Hometown: Hanson, Ma.

College: Boston College

High School: Whitman-Hanson

Kristie Mewis has accumulated numerous collegiate awards including being named a Division 1 ECAC All-Star, MAC Hermann Trophy Semifinalist, NSCAA First Team All-America and All-Southeast Region honoree. Mewis was also named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Season - Upperclassmen - first team, All-ACC first team. Mewis finished the season with a career-high of 16 goals, 12 assists. Kristen is the all-time leading scorer in Boston College history with 116 total points. She finished her career with 39 goals (9 game winning) and 38 assists.

Mewis was a member of the U.S. team that won the 2010 CONACAF U-20 Women's Championships in Guatemala to earn a berth to the 2010 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup. She appeared in five games, started three, and scored two goals. She's played in 15 total matches for the USA heading into the 2010 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup, including 11 international matches. She also made huge impact in the U-20 internationals, FIFA U-17 CONCACAF Women's Championship, and U-17 Women's World Cup collecting the Bronze Ball as the third best player in the tournament.

Mewis is excited to play with her favorite players from the US Women's Senior National Team, Becky Sauerbrunn and Lauren Cheney, and to play in front of the Kansas City fans. "I really wanted to stay in the U.S...I believe this league will be the best one yet." The anticipation of playing in front of the fans is something she is looking forward to most. "I'm so excited to come to Kansas City...I've never been to the Midwest...I heard the Kansas City (soccer) fans are the best!"

ERIKA TYMRAK

Position: Midfielder/Forward

Height: 5-5

Hometown: Bradenton, Fla.

College: Florida

High School: Edison Academic Center

Erika Tymrak, midfielder and U-23 National Team pool player, has snagged numerous awards in her time at the University of Florida such as two-time NSCAA First Team All-America, three-time All-SEC First Team, NSCAA All-South Region first team, Southeastern Conference Offensive Player of the Year, All-SEC first team selection, SEC Tournament MVP, Soccer America MVP first team selection, MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist and among candidates for Senior CLASS Award. Erika appeared in 22 matches with 21 starts. Tymrak is Florida's leader with goals (9), assists (12) and points (30). She is tied for third on Gators' career charts in assists (40).

WHITNEY BERRY

Position: Midfielder/Forward

Height: 5-5

Hometown: Wichita,-Kan.

College: Kansas

High School: Goddard

Whitney Berry, native of Wichita, Kansas, racked up the honors as a Jayhawk by being selected to two-time NSCAA All-Central Region First Team, All-Big 12 First Team, Academic All-Big 12 team and TopDrawerSoccer.com Top 100. She led her team with seven assists and was the second-most in the Big 12 in 2012. She is the leader at the University of Kansas for assists with 32, second in points with 78 and tied for third-most all time with 23 goals.

NIA WILLIAMS

Position: Defender

Height: 5-4

Hometown: Roseland Park, Kan.

College: Missouri State

High School: St. James Academy

Kansas City native and defender, Nia Williams has acquired awards such as four-time All-MVC selection, three-time MVC Defensive Player of the Week, and Defensive Player of the Year for the Missouri Valley conference. She is the seventh player in program history to receive the honor. Williams completed her four-year career with 14 career assists, which tie her for second in Missouri State University program history. Nia started all 69 matches she participated in and missed just five matches in her career. Williams is also the daughter of FC Kansas City Assistant coach Huw Williams.
