Professional Arena Soccer League Update

January 1, 2013 - Professional Arena Soccer League (PASL) News Release

Mustangs Gallop into 2013

1/1/13 - The Chicago Mustangs, one of seven new teams in the PASL this season, are emerging as serious contenders as they prepare to host the Dallas Sidekicks Sunday in their biggest test to date.

The Mustangs rallied for two critical one-goal wins last weekend against the Rio Grande Valley Flash and Cincinnati Kings. In winning their first road game of the year, the Mustangs came back from 5-2 down against Cincinnati to win 6-5. It was their fifth straight win and put them firmly in second place in the Central Division at 6-2.

The Mustangs are 3rd in the PASL in goals per game, led by LMFR veterans Miguel Vaca, Omar Tapia, and Omar Santillan, and young newcomers Nestor Hernandez and Bryan Velazquez. Chicago is a perfect 5-0 at home.

Player of the Week

Nestor Hernandez, Chicago Mustangs

Rookie midfielder Nestor Hernandez, 24, was the second player the Mustangs signed this offseason and he has quickly become an integral part of the Chicago attack. Hernandez leads the Mustangs with 19 goals and 27 points, which currently places him fifth in the league. His three game winning goals ties him for first in the league. In this weekend's two wins Hernandez contributed a total of six goals and three assists and he has 19 points in his last four games.

Sockers Streaks at 32, 45

San Diego's regular season winning streak stands at 32. San Diego is also an all-time 29-0 at home during the regular season. Including playoffs, US Open games, and the FIFRA Club Championships, the Sockers have won 45 in a row, surpassing the US Pro Team Sports record of 40 set by the indoor football Sioux Falls Storm in 2008.

Turlock Loses in Phoenix, Sockers Looming

The Turlock Express saw their six game winning streak come to an end after a disappointing loss at then 2-6 Real Phoenix Saturday, 9-8 in overtime. The Express, 6-3, now head to San Diego to get their first crack at the Sockers, followed by a trip to Tijuana the next day to face the Toros.

Small Ball

The Rockford Rampage lost 3-2 Saturday to the Rio Grande Valley Flash, equaling the lowest scoring game in PASL history. Rampage games are the lowest scoring in the league at a combined 10.9 goals per game. At the other end of the spectrum is the Anaheim Bolts whose games see an average of 20.6 goals per contest.

Still Perfect in Their Own Ways

The Dallas Sidekicks (6-0) and San Diego Sockers (8-0) remain the league's only two undefeated teams, while the Sacramento Surge (0-9) and Texas Strikers (0-7) are the PASL's only winless teams.
