UConn Hosts Louisville at Dodd this Friday

Norwich, CT - The University of Connecticut Huskies return to Dodd Stadium on Friday night to take on the University of Louisville Cardinals in a BIG EAST showdown, with first pitch set for 6:00 PM.

This will be the second straight weekend that the Huskies will play at Dodd, following their 2-1 victory over the University of South Florida Bulls on Saturday. One of the top college prospects, right-handed pitcher Matt Barnes, struck out ten in eight innings of work, while surrendering just three hits. He earned his ninth win of the season, showing off his skills in front of over 30 scouts, including Boston Red Sox Executive Vice President and General Manager Theo Epstein.

After sweeping the three-game series against USF, UConn comes into the weekend with a 34-13-1 overall record and leading the BIG EAST with a 18-3 mark in conference play. The Huskies have won five straight and 17 of their last 18 games.

Barnes and outfielder George Springer are all but certain first-round draft choices in June's Major League Baseball amateur draft.

Barnes, who hails from Bethel, is 9-3 this season with a 1.29 ERA. He has struck out 82 and only given up 49 hits in 91 innings of work.

Springer, another Connecticut native, from New Britain, is UConn's top hitter. He's hitting .379 with 10 home runs and 64 RBIs in 47 games. He's also 22-for-28 in stolen bases.

According to Baseball America, Springer is ranked the 10th best prospect heading into the 2011 MLB Draft, while Barnes comes in rated as the 14th best prospect.

Louisville currently stands at 25-23 on the season and 11-10 in BIG EAST games.

The Connecticut Tigers are the Class-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers and play in the New York-Penn League. The Tigers' home opener at Dodd Stadium will be June 20th 2011 at 7:05 P.M. against the Tri- City ValleyCats (Class-A affiliate of the Houston Astros). The New-York Penn League is a short season Single-A league with 14 teams that play 76 games per year.
