Ghostriders Declared Inactive; Travel Team To Be Created

March 28, 2006 - American Indoor Football Association (AIFA) News Release

American Indoor Football League President Andrew G. Haines announced Tuesday that due to the actions of owner Robert Boyd, the Carolina Ghostriders have been declared inactive for the remainder of the 2006 season and that a travel team will be created to give the Ghostriders' opponents their full complement of home games.

"The decisions of Mr. Boyd, and especially his handling of the situation have put the entire Southern Conference in an unfortunate predicament," Haines said. " We've been dealt a scenario we were not expecting, but we will adjust as best we can to handle the situation."

"I want everyone to know that this league has 14 outstanding owners who are committed to indoor football done right," Haines added. "We're going to get through this, learn from it, and become a stronger league."

The new team will be called the AIFL Ghostchasers and will play five games in Daytona Beach, Augusta, Rome, Richmond and Florence. Though it will wear the Ghostriders colors, Haines emphasized that it is not be a continuation of the Ghostriders and will have a separate listing in the team standings.

Five teams slated to play at Carolina - Daytona Beach, Chattahoochee Valley (Columbus, Ga.), Florence, Raleigh and Richmond, will be rescheduled . "We considered all possibilities for the new team to play a full schedule - even playing doubleheaders at some venues, but it just wasn't financially feasible at this time," Haines said. "It's not a perfect situation, but it is the best one we could make.

"What makes this frustrating is that I felt the league was coming off its best weekend ever," Haines said. "Erie and Huntington had a great meeting of undefeated teams, Maurice Lee had a record-breaking night [setting five league records] for Miami Valley against Steubenville in a game that was televised locally, Winless Daytona Beach gets a victory at 2-0 Augusta, the first overtime game in league history, and now this ... two steps forward, one step back."
