International League 2016 Items of Interest:

MEULENS & MONTOYO ELECTED TO IL HALL: In January the IL announced that former League MVP Hensley Meulens and former League Manager of the Year Charlie Montoyo will be inducted  into the circuit's Hall of Fame as members of the Class of 2016.  Both inductees will be presented with ÃŠºThe Curtain Callʺ statue during individual enshrinement ceremonies this season.  ÃŠºBam Bamʺ  Meulens, who has been hitting coach for the San Francisco Giants since 2010, played six seasons in the IL with Columbus and Ottawa, and later coached in Indianapolis.  He claimed the League's Most  Valuable Player Award in 1990 and led the circuit in homers, RBI, and runs in 1992 during a championship season in Columbus.  Montoyo, who has been the third base coach for the Tampa Bay Rays  since 2015, is the winningest manager in Durham Bulls history after leading the franchise to seven division titles and a pair of Governors' Cup championships between 2007 and 2014.

THREE NEW MANAGERS REPLACE VETERAN SKIPPERS: Each division welcomes one new manager in 2016, following the departure of three veteran skippers from the circuit in Scranton/WB's Dave  Miley, Toledo's Larry Parrish, and Charlotte's Joel Skinner. Two of the League's new skippers have MLB managerial experience, including Toledo's new field general Lloyd McClendon.  After having  managed the Pirates (2001-05) and Mariners (2014-15), McClendon rejoins the Tigers organization where he was previously a coach for eight seasons.  Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's new skipper Al Pedrique  was interim manager of the Diamondbacks for the second half of the 2004 season.  Pedrique was promoted by the Yankees this year from Double-A, much like Charlotte's new manager Julio Vinas.   Vinas makes his Triple-A debut after managing Chicago's affiliate in Birmingham for the past three seasons and winning one Southern League title.   

IL SEEKING FOURTH STRAIGHT ALL-STAR VICTORY IN CHARLOTTE: The International League has enjoyed quite a bit of success in the recent history of the Triple-A All-Star Game, a trend that  hopefully continues at the 2016 event at Charlotte's BB&T Ballpark.  The IL All-Stars have defeated their counterparts from the Pacific Coast League in each of the last three Triple-A All-Star Games and  six of the last seven overall.  When the Game changed to its current format in 1998, the IL managed just one victory in the first five seasons head-to-head against the PCL.  Since 2003 however, the  International League owns a sterling record of 10-3 at the Triple-A All-Star Game.   

SYRACUSE'S DON WAFUL HONORED: Former Syracuse Chiefs President and long-time advocate Don Waful will be presented with the 2016 Spirit of the International League Award during a celebration  for his 100th birthday at NBT Bank Stadium on April 8. Don's been associated with the Chiefs since 1961 and served as the club's President for 35 years.
