2012 Regular season gets underway

The Intercounty Baseball League kicked off its 94th season on Saturday with a pair of games as the 2012 regular season got underway with games in Barrie and Guelph.

In Barrie, the Baycats pounded out 16 hits to start the season with a bang, crushing the Burlington Twins 16-3.

Matt Logan homered, had three hits and drove in three runs for the Baycats, who allowed a run in the top of the first inning before scoring four runs in the bottom of the inning to coast to the win. The Baycats also scored five runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth in the dominating win.

Jordan Lundberg also homered and had three hits, scored three runs and drove in two more, while Ryan Spataro had three hits and scored three runs. Jon Waltenbury also drove in three runs for the winners, with Matt Proctor adding three hits and an RBI. Jeff Cowan contributed two hits and scored three runs for the winners.

Barrie used six pitchers in the game, including starter Brad Bissell who went three innings allowing one run on one hit with three striekouts and two walks.

Kurtis Robinson started and took the loss for the Twins. he went 3 1/3 innings, allowing seven runs - six earned - on six hits with one strikeout and three walks. Darryl Pui had two hits and two RBI for Burlington.

In Guelph, the Royals made their return to the IBL after a year's hiatus but the Ottawa Fat Cats spoiled their return, defeating the host Royals 5-4.

Kevin Dietrich drove in the winning run with a single in the top of the ninth inning, lifting the Fat Cats past the Royals.

Cody Mombourquette singled with one out in the ninth, stole second and then came home on Dietrich's hit to give Ottawa the lead and the win. The Fat Cats made the most of just seven hits, including two by Brandon Huffman and Kyle Barclay. Jason Coker drove in a pair of runs for Ottawa.

Starter Marc-Andre Major went five innings for the winners, allowing four runs on four hits with three walks and two strikeouts, but it was reliever Brett Sabourin who got the win with three innings of shutout relief, allowing just one hit with one strikeout and two walks. Josh Soffer pitched a perfect ninth for the save.

Frankie Hare had two hits and drove in two runs for the Royals, who had just five hits in the game. Reliever Ryan Greco took the loss, allowing one run on two hits over one inning.

There is just one game in the IBL on Sunday as the Toronto Maple Leafs host the Ottawa Fat Cats in their home opener at Dominico Field at Christie Pits at 2 p.m.
