2010 Roster Introduced
The Harrisburg City Islanders introduced their current roster and unveiled their 2010 uniforms in a press conference on Thursday morning at the Capital BlueCross Headquarters Building in Harrisburg. Capital BlueCross, a presenting sponsor of the City Islanders, has hosted the event each year of the team's existence.
Players donned the club's 2010 home uniforms, supplied by Nike, the global sports apparel giant and Harrisburg's official uniform supplier. The Capital BlueCross logo is once again featured prominently on the jersey's chest, along with Snickers, another presenting sponsor.
"We thank Capital BlueCross for once again hosting this annual event, which has become synonymous with the start of our season," said City Islanders President Eric D. Pettis. "With the World Cup just around the corner, soccer will be on everyone's minds in the coming months. With a talented City Islanders team and a variety of special events planned, fans can expect a very exciting summer."
"It is no surprise that the Harrisburg City Islanders are entering their seventh season of play," said David Skerpon, Capital BlueCross Vice President of Corporate Communications and Advertising. "A well-run organization like the Islanders is no stranger to longevity. This team epitomizes what we look for in a community partner, and what the community looks for in a professional sports team."
Seven of the 13 players introduced by City Islanders head coach Bill Becher on Thursday played for the club in 2009. Defenders Dustin Bixler (Red Land High School), Geoff Bloes (Middletown High School), and Anthony Calvano, midfielders Jason Pelletier, Kai Kasiguran, and David Schofield, and goalkeeper Tomer Chencinski all return. Bixler, an All-League First Team selection last year, enters the season as the team's all-time leader in starts and minutes played. Schofield, the club's all-time assists leader, is the lone remaining player from Harrisburg's original 2004 squad.
Two familiar faces return to the City Islanders after a year away from the club. Goalkeeper Danny Cepero, who starred for Harrisburg in 2008 while on loan from the New York Red Bulls of Major League Soccer, steps back between the pipes. Also returning is midfielder Brian Ombiji, a key piece of the team's 2007 Championship run.
The club has high hopes for midfielder Nate Jafta, a playmaking force in the Premier Development League from '06-08. Fellow newcomers Dominic Oppong (midfielder) and Anthony Di Biase (defender) will look to establish themselves in Harrisburg's lineup. So will midfielder Mpho Moloi, a former Houston Dynamo (MLS) draft pick who has most recently played professionally in his native South Africa.
We'll still be shaping this roster over the next week or so, but we feel confident in the team we've started to build," said Becher, a finalist for 2009 USL-2 Coach of the Year Award. "This is a talented group that should be willing to work hard every time out. I think we have skill and versatility, and a good mix of veterans and youth. Every year is a new challenge, and we look forward to it."
The City Islanders wrap up their preseason schedule this afternoon at 4:00 p.m. against Temple University at Ambler Field in Philadelphia. The player development partnership with Philadelphia Union will begin as Union player Toni Stahl and Union trialist and Harrisburg native J.T. Noone (Central Dauphin High School/Temple University) will suit up for the Islanders. Stahl, a rookie from Finland, was ejected from the Union's opening match on March 25th and will use the match to gain playing time while serving a one game suspension. Noone will have the opportunity to impress Union's Coach John Hackwarth who will be there to watch Noone and the City Islanders players.
Harrisburg opens their regular season on Saturday, April 17 on the road against the Richmond Kickers (7:00 p.m.). Harrisburg's home opener will be on Saturday, April 24, against the Real Maryland Monarchs. Kickoff at Skyline Sports Complex will be 7:00 p.m.
