Get To Know Rod Underwood: What Drives City's New Man:

With the announcement of Rod Underwood as new head coach, the City Stars have found a proven winner that fits in perfectly with the off-the-field mission of the club. Rod's soccer background has not been limited to professional clubs as he has worked extensively with various youth organizations across the country.

"Rod is a perfect fit with our organization," said Cleveland City Stars General Manager Mark Geissbauer. "He's a dedicated family man and is committed to working in the community. Besides bringing an experienced and qualified technical coach to Cleveland, Rod brings a great attitude and work ethic that will greatly benefit our continued contributions to the city through our Rising Stars Youth Program."

Rod is already dedicated to the youth program's mission.

"I look forward to the opportunity to impact the kid's lives," he says. "This platform I have been provided is something I have prayed about and I do envision being greatly involved in the lives of youth."

Rod's approach to youth outreach is not solely based on soccer skills, but also centers around social and emotional development.

"It's about helping them become good people," he says. "And if it just so happens that they become a good soccer player, that's fine by me."

Rod also brings a unique outlook to the program as he becomes the only African-American head coach in the division. The first African-American to play soccer at Furman University, he remembers the experience as being a good one.

"It was good for me to learn to be very diverse and it was an eye-opener socially," he says.

Rod hopes that his success will not only inspire others to achieve, but also that it opens doors for those who believed it to be an unattainable goal.

Rod comes enthusiastically to Cleveland from the USL-1 Portland Timbers, where he served as the first assistant for the past two seasons. Rod's impressive credentials include stops with the South Carolina Shamrocks, Albuquerque Geckos and New Mexico Chiles as well as Georgia State University.

In earlier years, Rod played forward and midfield at Furman as well as for several amateur and professional teams in Atlanta, New Mexico and New Orleans.

With his self-proclaimed no-nonsense, shoot-it-straight approach to coaching, Rod is excited to take on the high expectations of coaching a championship team. He acknowledges that adding the dynamic of moving up a division adds more complexity and difficulty to the situation, but he is embracing the challenge.

"The pressure of being a coach is something that I thrive on," he says. "As a coach I am always looking to achieve in the most difficult of situations."

While in Portland, Rod coached new City Stars midfielder Arsene Oka. Oka is happy to see his former coach make the move to Cleveland.

"Rod was more than my coach in Portland, he was my brother and a good friend," said Oka. "He always had a word of encouragement everyday for me and also for each player on the team. I am very excited to play for a team that Rod coaches because I think that he is one the best coaches in the U.S. Despite not being the head coach last season, he always created something new during practice to motivate the team. I love his working style and I believe we will have a successful season in Cleveland with Rod as the head coach."

Before the 1994 World Cup, Rod was approached about writing a book. Full of soccer expertise, he went on to co-author Understanding Soccer and is now working on a book of his own.

As Rod nears completion on his newest book, the next chapter of his coaching career brings him to Cleveland to lead the City Stars through what is sure to be another exciting season.
